FS: SPD road pedals - new - $50

Submitted by sgnoka on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 9:36am

Shimano PDA525 pedals. Uses SPD cleats such as on mountain bike pedals, but are sleek and single-sided for the road. This is a great pedal if you use MTB shoes on the road.

New old stock; pictures and more details at:

If interested, contact me at 2000 [at] jt10000.com to take a look. I'm on West 115th St in Manhattan.

Venti- 12/31 Cancelled

Submitted by GeorgeArcarola on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 8:57am

The first (and last) seven miles of this ride need a week of melting. The roads along the north shore of Nassau are ~ two thirds their normal width due to snow on the sides. The ride is CANCELLED. Look for something similar in January.

Thanks,
George Arcarola

SATURDAY 1/1 *AND* SUNDAY 1/2, B17/50 WTF! #2 - "Hartsdale X2"

SATURDAY 1/1 *AND* SUNDAY 1/2, B17/50 Winter Training & Fun! #2 - "Hartsdale X2"

START: Meet Saturday and/or Sunday at 10:30AM - 242 Street & Broadway at the end of the #1 train

FINISH: 4PM-ish at a subway in the Bronx

LEADERS: Neile Weissman - Saturday; Michael Notaro - Sunday

WHAT: Drippy roads; hung over club members; a New Year's day bikes-on-trains-ban; 40% wet forecast for Sunday; and one leader unavailable to ride Saturday -- so we're going to improvise. I'm going to lead a Saturday excursion to Hartsdale. Michael will repeat the cue on Sunday, weather permitting. There's enough warm weather between now and then to wash out the snow, so road bikes should be OK. We should be able to find something open for a bite on New Year's day, but bring snacks anyway.

Bergen & Rockland Roads are Clear

Submitted by JJacobson on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 4:11pm

I rode from Piermont to Englewood Cliffs and back today on Route 9W. The road was clear and dry. The shoulders were clear except for Englewood Cliffs. I now have 7975 miles for 2010. It was the first time I can recall that on a sunny day I was the only cyclist on this stretch.

501: the roadway is clear. However it is narrower than before becuase the plowed snow is on the side and covers any shoulders which existed.
For the next day or so the melting snow runoff may freeze on roads at least until 10 AM or so. This will be less of a problem as the temps rise later in the week.

Unlike the secondary roads in NYC's outer boros, all the backroadswere plowed by Tuesday. Some slushy patches may still exist here and there and they may be ice in the early AM.

A great use for segregated bike lanes: dumping snow!

Submitted by MSilver on Tue, 12/28/2010 - 2:31pm

There were about four feet of snow today in the First Avenue bike lane. All the snow from the sidewalk had been shoveled into it. I think it will remain there for a good while, considering that the city hasn't even cleared most of the side streets yet.

Meanwhile, riding in the traffic lanes on First and Second Avenue has become more dangerous after a snowstrom, with only two lanes completely clear of snow, and motorists not in the mood to be slowed down by a cyclist riding in them.

Is the NYCC Bulletin obsolete?

Submitted by MSilver on Tue, 12/28/2010 - 2:13pm

Yes, I think it is obsolete.

The December bulletin wasn't available on the website until mid-month, and I doubt that anyone complained or even cared. And what is the new bulletin anyway? Just a "Prez Sez" by Derek Chu, listing his accomplishments in 2010.

I predicted that the bulletin would soon become obsolete when the option to have it mailed was discontinued. I think it's time to stop with the facade of calling this a bulletin, and simply let it die.
