City slams bicyclist with $1,500 in fines for running red lights

Off the chain! City slams bicyclist with $1,500 in fines for running red lights (NYDailyNews, August 21, 2011)

Manhattan bicyclist Juan (JC) Rodriguez didn't learn his lesson after running his first red light. Or his second. But the third time may be the charm - because it came with more than $1,500 in fines.

"It's absurd," complained Rodriguez, 45, who's also a pedicab driver. "When you look at the fines leveled and the actual offenses, it makes no sense."

Some bicycling advocates agree fining two-wheelers the same as tractor-trailers is overkill, while others say bikers should stop at red lights.

THE ALL-CLASS RIDE IS ON

Submitted by NYCC Events on Sat, 08/20/2011 - 7:26pm

See you at the Central Park Boathouse Parking lot at 8:30 AM.....with the exception of the C12s who meet at Woodlawn(last stop of #4 train).

If you are riding one of the C12s be sure to leave plenty of time for the subway ride to Woodlawn....and doublecheck any service advisories that could slow down your trip. Remember getting anywhere by subway on a Sunday morning at that hour takes twice as long.

Rain info: the chance of rain increases during the afternoon.

Bailouts if necessary......

Rye train station is less than 3 miles from lunch.

Woodlawn Subway Station and the #4 train is 18 miles from lunch.

Cyclists should avoid or exercise extreme caution over loose pebbles.  Fortuneately they waited until after R Rosenthal's ride this weekend.

Man dies after being crushed under cement truck

A man died Thursday after he lost control of his bicycle on a Manhattan street and was run over by a cement truck, police said.

The 52-year-old went through a red light and made a right turn on Delancey St. from Chrystie St. on the lower East Side about 5:30 p.m., cops and witnesses said.

The rider, who lived in Brooklyn, lost control of the bike, smacked the rear end of a moving tractor trailer and was pulled under the rear wheels, crushing him to death, cops and witnesses said.
