Road Repair Class at Bicycle Habitat

Submitted by LChittenden on Thu, 09/15/2011 - 12:48pm

I took the Road Repair class with Dave at Bicycle Habitat last night and just wanted to post that if you are considering taking a class this was an excellent, excellent experience.  Great instructor--made everything very easy to understand.  Small, casual, friendly forum.  Stuff every rider should know.

Der Spiegel: Tempers Fray, bikes & cars--Battle for Germany's Roads

Submitted by AGarcia on Thu, 09/15/2011 - 11:14am

English translation from the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel.

Guess drivers and cyclists fight for the roads over the world...like here in New York City. Wonder if there is a German Janette Sadik-Khan.

"The balance of power on Germany's streets is changing, as an army of lone
fighters winds its way to the front of the lines of cars stuck in the
ubiquitous traffic jams. A new, wild social order is taking shape on the

Uninformative Bike Show Report #2 - 2011

Submitted by RRosenthal on Thu, 09/15/2011 - 9:24am

If there's a whiter industry than the bike industry, I don't know it. There is one black working at one of the perhaps 1000 boths; there may be a second one. Mind you each booth has a number of people. So I'm saying maybe 1 out of, oh, let's say 5000 people is black. She is young and is in charge of marketing at Polar.

And the percent of black attendees is even smaller than that.

Can you microchip a bike?

Submitted by CWood on Thu, 09/15/2011 - 12:28am

The headline is just an excuse to post this wonderful story about Willow, the Colorado-to-Manhattan-and-back calico cat.

But really, if a cat, why not a bike? Would kind humans not take in the wayward wheel, keep it oiled and its coat glossy, before returning it to its rightful owner?

Best quote: "If I could microchip my kids, I would," said Mrs. Squires.

Many thanks to Randy Cohen

Many thanks to Randy Cohen for an excellent talk on the ethics of urban transportation at last night's meeting, and to Richard Rosenthal for "bullying" him into giving it. Cohen's eleven arguments about cars in Manhattan were both interesting and entertaining, and generated a lively Q&A session afterward.
