Roller recs anyone what brands to avoid.

Submitted by Sir Roger on Tue, 11/17/2015 - 11:01am

OK decided I hate the trainer so am going back to rollers. I had some cheapo Nashbar ones that were not that great so looking for something better but not willing to believe that I have to buy Kreitlers.

I have read a few reviews of the performance bike Travel Trac ones. Anyone have any experience with those. Any brands particularly crap or good ??

Anyone got a set getting dusty ??

Monday 11/16 - Marilyn's Birthday Ride

Submitted by nymultisport on Sun, 11/15/2015 - 5:01pm

Our usual shmoozy C-ish pace ride along the Bronx waterfront, with it's amazing variety of parks. 40-45 miles with an equal number of turns.  Meetup 8:45am at Cafe Amrita, 110th & CPW; departure promptly at 9:00am. Outdoor lunch at Split Rock Country Club after a carry of one mile from a deli. Home well before dark, but flashers are always a good idea. Several subway bails available on the return.

10 days ago Janet and I had been to West Nyack and now had less than a mile to the bridge.  The last thing I expected would disrupt our ride down Hudson Terrace was the violent impact of an SUV from behind.  I have no recollection of flying through the air but I must have, landing in the grass, separated from my bike, not sure I could move and aware of the initial point of impact….my throbbing lower back.  Janet was far enough in front of me on the shoulder that I had the thought she might not know. That is until she appeared above me and collapsed nearly on top of me.

Lulu's Cancelled; New Ride on Sunday

Submitted by CWaaser on Fri, 11/13/2015 - 5:40pm

The cold wind on Sunday will be too much for me. (I have asthma & can't breathe in cold wind.)  So Linda & I have cancelled the Lulu's ride.  Instead we have listed a C-14 ride for Sunday, scouting a route to Scarsdale going over the High Bridge on the way out, and using the Bronx River Greenway coming home.  It may take a little while for the new ride to be posted.

B16 Canal & Cranbury Ride 11/14

Submitted by J S on Fri, 11/13/2015 - 2:59pm

Hi folks, just a quick note. Ride should proceed as planned. However, as it may be a bit cold and windy, I may cut the route short to 40 miles.

Please be prepared to do the alternate route:

Continuing Traffic Disruption between Nyack & Piermont

Submitted by CWaaser on Thu, 11/12/2015 - 9:20pm

Latest news received 11/12/15:

"Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) will continue installing steel girders near the Rockland shoreline, connecting the new bridge's abutment to already-installed support structures in the Hudson River. Safely accomplishing the work will require reducing River Road/Piermont Avenue to one lane during weekdays between 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flag persons will keep traffic moving by alternating the directional flow between north and south. TZC also will hold traffic on River Road once daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for up to 20 minutes through Wednesday, Nov. 18 to enable the safe movement of girders and other materials."

Dirt trail in Alpine

Submitted by CWang on Wed, 11/11/2015 - 10:27pm

According to Google Maps, there's a dirt trail in Rockleigh Woods Sanctuary.  Does anyone know what condition it's in?  Is it single track?  Is it doable in smooth tires, or only for knobbies?  The terrain does looks hilly on the map.

Cycling Camp for NYCC'ers in Southern California in February

Submitted by FLeffel on Wed, 11/11/2015 - 7:30pm

For the second year in a row, I’ve arranged for Cycling Camp of San Diego (CCSD --- www.ccsd.com) to offer a special 5 day cycling camp for NYCCer’s. The camp will take place February 1 -5 (Monday – Friday). We’ll need a minimum of 10 folks to sign up to make it work.

I’ve found the CCSD early season base camps to be a great way to shake off the winter doldrums and get a head start on the riding season (and prep for the SIGs!) And just the thought of riding in sunny Southern California when it's so frigid and bleak in New York has its own very special appeal.
