Techies: Backwards Compatibility Q?

Submitted by PStorey on Sat, 12/12/2015 - 10:24am

I'm lowering the gearing on my 7-Speed beater bike (Shimano).  I need a longer arm derailleur.  Ebay is chock-full of 9-speed derailleurs (specifically XT RD-M750). Would one of those be backwards-compatible with my 7-Spd shifters and Freewheel?

Full particulars: 52/42 Front. 14-34 "Mega-Range" 7 spd Freewheel.  Shimano 7-Spd DT shifters (rear is indexed, front not).

Any help gratefully appreciated,

Peter

For some reason, it quit working.  I installed Garmin Connect as required. Tried disconnecting and reconnecting.  No luck.  Anyone have any ideas on what I am doing wrong or what is going on?  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks!

A shout out to Yvette and Karen for the Holiday Party.  Great planning and execution.  Thanks for sweating the details!

PS> On that note, a special mention to Peter Jacobson, an HVAC specialist who figured out the problem with Cafe Tallulah's air conditioning.

B15 dirt ride for Saturday - Patriot's Path

Submitted by NWeissman on Wed, 12/09/2015 - 10:03pm

Chris Hartmann created a less "technical" variation of the Patriot's Path cue sheet and I'm leading at an easy pace.  You still want something more than a road bike with 700x23 tires, but hybrid will do. Will be meeting at Penn Station at 7:45AM.
