Alternate route to Greenwich, over the Tappan Zee?

Submitted by EODonnell on Mon, 08/09/2021 - 8:30am

We rode the Greenwich, CT Mansions ride last Saturday.  The Bronx was dreary.  So much so that I doubt  my ride partner will want to ever go through it again.  So what is the alternative?  As per Google, we could go over the GW, up 9W, over the Tappan Zee*, and then what.  I looked on Google Bicycle Maps and saw that one (via 119-E) could go over White Palins Rd. (119), until it becomes Main St. in White Plains, when it crosses the Sprain Brook Pkwy it then changes its name to Tarrytown Rd., R turn and south onto Lexington Ave., continue onto Bryant, right onto Westchester Ave. (120).  Is this really viable?  Or as a lot of traffic, poor shoulder?  I honestly don’t know. 17.2 miles

Happy 80th Birthday

A man joined the club in 1992 and has been on the board for five or six years. He has been the VP of rides for five or six years, presided over meetings of the board and the club until a new president was elected following Eden Weiss’s stroke. He initiated the club’s junior membership program and integrated KidsRide Club into the NYCC.

bent aluminum seatstay; fixable?

So yesterday's group ride was cut short by a minor incident that probably would count as "Comedy Of Errors" if it weren't for the fact that a few people sustained some minor injuries. In addition to some gnarly looking bone bruises on my knee and shin, my biggest personal takeaway was a bent drive-side seatstay. See pics:

Road cycling classes

Submitted by mreyes on Sat, 08/07/2021 - 11:57pm

Hello,

Are there any one day classes that are happening the rest of the year that go over road cycling skills, such as taking corners and pacelining? I am not looking to join a club in order to get access to training program and it seems that the programs that are offered by NYCC are over. Thanks much.

The future is now.

The chief concern is safety. The Peter Principle would dictate that a statistically significant number of these riders are beyond their capabilitiy. It's just that it hasn't hit the fan just yet. I'd hazard that they are at or past their limit of bike handling. Should one more variable present itself, and you are within their purview, you will be colateral damage.

The deadly duo of confidence and incompetence has now raised its ugly head.

Ride defensively: you don't want to use your health insurance deductable in the last few miles getting home.

ENY and Harriman

Submitted by EODonnell on Fri, 08/06/2021 - 6:02pm

I saw that the 125 and 100 mile routes go into Harriman on 9/25?  I did not see a detailed route map or cue sheet, but FYI, Toughman/USAT Nationals duathlon, triathlon and Aquavelo will be in Harriman on the same day.  There will be at least 4 races overlapping on 9/25 with ENY.  Just curious of NYCC was aware, and taking this into account.  Will be crowded on the roads?

Knee Pain

Submitted by JAzelvandre on Thu, 08/05/2021 - 8:55am

I'm writing today to ask about any experiences anyone has had with knee pain.

Formerly (prior to the last several months), cycling has been absolutely great for my knees. But now, for some as yet unknown reason, I am experiencing some problems.  I haven't yet seen a doctor, but I would characterize it as a kind of "runner's knee" - tendonitis/bursitis kind of thing.  Rather worrisome.

I don't believe there have been any bike fit changes, but I'll be investigating that.  Could it be overtraining?  Also, I was trying to run earlier in the year, so that's a possibility.

If anyone has any experience with this, or any recommendations of medical professionals, tips, tricks etc. that would be much appreciated!

Paint Damage

Submitted by hiawatha98 on Wed, 08/04/2021 - 9:03pm

Hello,

I have this weird issue with the paint on my bike and this is the second bike this has happened to. The paint will become rubbery and have noticeably more resistance if you run your finger over it. The pain will also appear dull compared to the area around it and almost looks like it has a white coat of something on it. Whenever I tried to clean the paint, it looks as if I’m peeling off a layer of the paint and it create this little holes.
