Women bike racers, or women who want to be bike racers, or women who’d like to learn more about bike racing, or women who want to get real fast on their  bike, take a look.  A little background on Lance Leener.

dispelling a myth

from a nationally known mechanic: I need to take a moment to dispel the myth that’s out there that it’s mandatory to replace your cassette when you replace your chain. That’s not true. You only need to replace a cassette if the cogs are worn out and they skip. In other words, a new chain will work fine on an older cassette, just so long as it isn’t worn out.

VIsitor from UK - Escape New York

Submitted by johnpears on Thu, 08/15/2013 - 6:17am

Hi folks,

Me and a few friends from the club I cycle with, Crawley Wheelers in the south east of UK, are heading 'over the pond' to ride the 100-mile Escape New York!

I sent Carrie a message to find out if there are any social meetups after the event in the evening, which there aren't, but suggested I should post here to see if anyone was interested? Our most probable post-event will be drinking beer and indulging in bad food, so if anyone has recommendations on where best to do this, or would like to join us, than it would be great to hear from you! Or if anyone has plans already, would you mind us joining? :)

DOT/NYPD commercial cyclist crackdown

While I agree that commercial cyclists riding on sidewalks, wrong way and other violations should certainly be targeted I am concerned that there is no effort by NYPD to crack down on speeding, running red lights (the famous NYC red light...next 5 cars make the left turn) etc.  . Also no sign whatsoever of a crackdown by DOT / NYPD on cars driving or parking in the bike lanes.

Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Wed, 08/14/2013 - 12:25pm

Many of you probably know at least something about Major Taylor. Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor was a great bicycle racer at the turn of the century – the last century.

He’s kinda like a Jackie Robinson story, a black athlete who was prohibited from competing because he was black.  It was a time when segregation and prejudice were the norm, when it was permitted, even encouraged.  The rules actually said, “No coloreds allowed”.

So Major Taylor raced in Europe, in Australia, beat all the champions of the day.

Brevet = advice, please!

Hey NYCCers! I am planning on doing Saturday, August 17th's "Petersburg 300k" - a whopping, terrifying 190 miles with a ton of climbing. Has anyone done a brevet, or a comparably crazy distance? Any advice? (Anything from "how do I carry my stuff" to "what stuff?" to nutrition and pain on the saddle...) THANKS!

Question on the difficulty of the Bike MS 55 mile route.

Submitted by kommie on Tue, 08/13/2013 - 7:31am

Hello all:I have a question on the route for the 55 mile distance of the upcoming Bike MS event.  I plan to ride with my son.  He is 15 years old.  We have done several 25+ mile rides, going up the west side and over the GW, then down to battery park city.   He wants to ride the 55 mile Bike MS course, but I'm not sure about it.  My primary concern is the hills we may encounter in NJ.  Has anyone ridden this course?  Could you give me a sense of how difficult the course is?  What are the biggest hills?  What is the event like at that distance.  I figure we will cruise around 10-12 mph on the flats.  Are we going to get kicked off the course for going too slow??   My son really wants to do it, but I am relucatant b
