Tuesday morning encounter

Submitted by ac2go on Thu, 02/25/2016 - 11:36am
I rode in the park Tuesday morning. I do loops around Harlem Hill. A nicely organized double pace line passed me at one point (sometime between 6 & 7am). As we approached the bottom of the hill by the pool, they came up on my right (no "on your right"), and got very, very close. A fellow said good morning—his handlebars were probably 6 inches from mine. A little too close for me... maybe not for you, but definitely for me, especially when passing at close to 20mph.

Volunteer Party....Thanks again for your efforts

Submitted by Hudson Hartmann on Wed, 02/24/2016 - 11:22pm

Thanks to all who braved the inclement weather to make it down to Union Square for the Volunteer Party. The party was for all who help make the club run as well as it does, and we are always looking for more volunteers across all levels and events! Next year let's make the party even bigger with more volunteers!

“Riding a bike makes you feel like you are flying,” Ms. Suleiman said. Ms. Salibi echoed that sentiment, saying, “I feel free.”

Manhattan shops with internal-hub expertise

Submitted by HBorgeson on Tue, 02/23/2016 - 12:18am

My year-old commuter bike has a Shimano Nexus internal hub (8 speeds). I've got the little indicator marks in alignment but still have trouble with the hub from time to time--such as it coming out of gear entirely. Does anyone know what shops in Manhattan have expertise with that equipment?

Thanks,

Hannah

NYCC Accident insurance coverage

Submitted by GRoss on Mon, 02/22/2016 - 9:31am

This is a repeat to a reply I made to Ken Weissman's question whether a ride posted on the MB but not on the ride listing is covered by our insurance. The subject deserves its own topic line in case not everyone reads Ken's message. The club purchases accident and liability insurance under a program of The League of American Wheelmen, d/b/a League of American Bicyclists."

Our insurance covers "members and volunteers of insured clubs while participating in covered activities."

"Covered activities" include "bicycling-related activities conducted and supervised by the insured club, including but not limited to, the following . . . . Recreational bicycle rides and time trials . . . ."*

Police between Piermont and Grandview

Submitted by ejlat on Sun, 02/21/2016 - 6:08pm

I was riding with my son this afternoon just past Piermont and a very angry police officer pulled us over and started yelling and threadened to impound our bikes - make us walk home - promised we would always remember his name. My son was riding not quite behind me - maybe 1/2 a body width to my left. This was a way over reaction. So just be careful. Not sure if they don't want bikers or this officer just needs to get a life.
