Has anyone ever used Continental Grand Prix 4000sii REFLEX tires?
These have a reflective strip (hence the name reflex) on the side wall.
I'm wondering if this strip stays on? and if the reflective feature works to make your bike more visible to cars?
n.b.: On this particular thread I would prefer not to hear about Continental tires in general, or about using lights on your bike, or an expletive laden discourse on our 4 wheeled roadmates. Like the old SAT, their will be a penalty for guessing incorrectly.
thanks
the knot
Was looking up the ride library and playing around with designing a route. Anyone have a favorite way to do the knot that maximizes climbing? I tried a few variations but couldn't really get more than 1500 feet of climbing out of it.
cycling now permitted on Jones Beach boardwalk and walks all year
just respect peds. I enjoyed a morning ride during the July heat spell. the whole thing including a spin to Tobay (the next beach to the east) on a paved trail was about 12 miles. this did not include riding a path from Wantagh (I drove with Joan)

Great Experience at Conrad's Bike Shop
Want to report on the excellent customer service I've been receiving at Conrad's in Midtown East--the owner, John, has been amazingly patient and helpful as I make the switch to speedplays from spds. He has been letting me practice with the speedplays on his trainer for a couple of weeks now so that I'm fully confident before they go on the bike.
Perhaps decent customer service at a bike shop shouldn't be notable, but it certainly feels like it is. Unlike many other bike shops, I haven't been talked down to because I happen to be a woman, and the whole process feels careful and unhurried, which is such a relief.
Thought it was worth giving them a shout-out...
why a bike stays upright
Interesting article about one engineer's quest to figure out why/how bikes stay upright.
Turns out there are lots of potential design features that allow a bike to balance, and that many "rules" can be broken if other components are designed correctly.

Wall Street Rides FAR for Autism Research
This year's Wall Street Rides FAR for Autism research is scheduled for October 8th in the Lower Hudson Valley. It's a great ride - with three options on really beautiful, scenic routes;
The Family Loop (14 miles)
The Intermediate Loop (35 miles)
The Metric Century (62 miles)
It's well supported, with a fantastic catered lunch and music afterwards. Last year was the first year - and they raised over $234,000. Hopefully this year it will be more!
You can register here: http://www.wallstreetridesfar.org/?CID=11
Discounted registration is $42.50 until tomorrow, July 20th.
The nicest thing that has happened to me in 36 years of cycling here
A few weeks ago on an unusually hot Alt. ClimBathon we needed water but were in a residential neighborhood. We were on Douglas St. in Englewood Cliffs. It must be the shortest street in the entire ZIP code. I collected bottles, went to a door, a woman answered, I asked would she fill our water bottles. She stared at me none too pleasantly and said nothing. I again asked, "Water?" ...Whereupon she snapped at me, "I know what water is!" She then did fill our bottles.
