Bicycle Film Festival Program 2 goes live this Friday. Like Program 1, we'll be showing a number of shorts, this time introduced by cinéaste and film critic extraordinaire (me). Click on the pink "poster" on the home page.

As before, you'll need a ticket (free). The passcode is BFF2NYCC. I hope you'll check it out!

A welcome sight! For those of you who, like me, when riding north from the GWB on 9W prefer to by-pass 9W from E.

Harry Parker is working on a story about biking during the pandemic. He would like to talk to people who either took up biking, or dramatically changed their relationship with it in response to quarantine.

Brooklyn Bridge on the Hudson

Rather than widen the paths to national standards, as hundreds of organizations and communities have called for, the PA’s strategy will accelerate the decline in service by inducing more pedestrians to use it.

NYCC Representative on Prospect Park Loop Users' Committee

Submitted by Steve Vaccaro on Wed, 03/17/2021 - 3:39pm

If you ride in Prospect Park regularly, and have time and inclination to participate in monthly meetings to discuss how the loop should be managed for the benefit of all users, please let me know.  I have been asked to come up with a representative for the Prospect Park Community Committee.  Eden Weiss used to serve but no longer can.

FWIW, I participated in the analogous committee for Central Park for several years, it was fun and worth it!

Flattest century in and around NYC?

Submitted by Craig V on Wed, 03/17/2021 - 11:52am

I'd like to take my teenage son on his first century ride when he's on spring break in two weeks. We're trying to hit the magic 100 number without too many hills, and we have all day from sunrise to sunset to make the trip. I like the Transportation Alternatives NYC Century route linked here, but I'm a bit reluctant given the frequent need to stop at lights. The Escape NY route linked here also seems doable even if the hills look daunting for a first century. Please let us know if you have other suggestions. Thanks in advance. :)

South County Trailway to close for repairs

Submitted by jzisfein on Tue, 03/16/2021 - 10:25pm

Westchester County has announced closure of the South County Trailway between Barney St in Yonkers and Rt 119 in Elmsford from mid-March through the end of summer 2021.

Read the announcement here.

As you probably know, the SCT in this area has deteriorated from extremely uncomfortable to borderline unrideable and dangerous. Bummer that they need to close it now but we can look forward to a smoother ride next year or maybe as soon as this coming fall.
