Thursday Morning Central Park laps

Submitted by GRoss on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 10:11pm

If it is actually raining at 5:00 AM the ride will be officially cancelled. Let's hope that the forecast for "few showers" means showers somewhere else.

Road ID?

Submitted by JOlson on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 1:38pm

There is a product on the market called "Road ID", heavily advertised in BICYCLING  magazine and probably other places, too. In one version, it is just a bracelet which gives your name, address,  and contact information of next-of-kin, friend, etc.. But the one that they push is tied in electronically to a site which contains your medical history, accessible by internet or phone (don't ask me how this works) to further data (e.g., medical history, allergies. meds, etc.) via a password and username on the back of the Road ID.

Re: Over Dues: A Case for A Bump Up in Membership Fee

Submitted by MBruckner on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 11:45am

Hi All,

I wanted to gauge people's thoughts about the elimination of the couples' membership option. In my family, I am the cyclist and my fiancee is the runner. To a certain extent, I run because of her and she bikes because of me. I've signed her up for a membership the last few years because it was only marginally more expensive to do so. I feel that I get excellent value for my membership fee and am happy to pay $30 for it. However, I'm unlikely to sign up my fiancee for a $30 membership and she almost surely won't pay for it herself.  Obviously other couple dynamics are different and I'm curious:

Teen who killed cyclist from behind in Seattle gets only $42 ticket

Teen drove onto the shoulder and struck and killed cyclist John Przychodze. According to Kirkland Police Detective Allan O’Neill unless a person’s driving recklessly, they’re intoxicated, (on) drugs or alcohol, then there’s really no criminal charges to be made. More info here.

If someone leaves a loaded gun accessible to a toddler and the toddler kills someone, the gun owner is responsible for the accident. When will the United States charge drivers according to the deadly weapon they have in their hands?

Photos of Jim Babbitt

Submitted by americ9597 on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 5:40pm

Hi everyone, I just stumbled across this message board in a google search for Jim Babbitt. I learned he passed away in 2005 and was a member of this club and very well liked. Jimmy was a good friend of mine growing up and I am crushed by this news. To me, it was yesterday. I am attempting to contact Maureen, his wife. I am wondering if there is any link to archive photos of him?

I would really appreciate a response. Thank you.

501 vs. 9W

Submitted by Cyclegalnycc on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 4:16pm

I love the shoulder on 9W, but frequently opt for 501 or 505...slower traffic, prettier scenery, more variation on colors this time of year.  I did a 9W>340>501 loop today, and on my return on 501 there was a great reason for avoiding 501 during the week for the next month or so:  Trucks which vacuum up the leaf piles left on the street.  They suck the leaves in and the mess that ensues in the air is unavoidable unless you have a space helmet on!  My guess is, they don't come 'round on the weekends.  9W, however, doesn't do much, if anything, to clean up, so that won't happen there.

Wed morning Sunrise Laps ride

Submitted by CGuzzetta on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 12:44pm

The weather forecast sounds horrible for tomorrow morning's Sunrise Laps ride.  It it's raining or the roads are wet at 5:30 AM, the ride is off.  I won't know for certain till then.  I won't have access to a computer tomorrow morning  so won't be able to post an "official game on/off".  Just look out the window, you'll know.

Hope to see you tomorrow morning. Though not optimistic.
