getting new road bike

Submitted by tfan on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 10:43pm

Hello. I currently have a hybrid and am getting a road bike. Are there any classes or other avenues to learn how to properly ride a road bike, I am very much a rookie but want to learn properly. I understand there are weekend rides with the club but I work on the weekends. I am really looking for basic road bike handling knowledge. Thanks

Hi Ladies,

The TD Five Boro Bike Tour is looking for cat-A female riders to join the lead group of the tour.  Currently almost all the applications for this position are men.  The race directors are really looking for ladies to join the pace line.  This is an elite and exclusive role in the Tour, and ride is comped – no entry fee.  It will be also be an incredible experience to lead a 30,000 + group of cyclists at a fast pace.

Trayvon Martin, NYPD Enforcement of Motor Vehicles on Cyclists, and Cultural Bias

Submitted by HSchiffman on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 1:03pm

The tragic death of Trayvon Martin has put a shoulder to the wheel of righting injustice in our society. Information technology, as in cellphone use as part of the story and instant information relay, is part of the equation for change. Vast numbers of Americans are receptive. Just as the Sanford, Florida police had decided to go with social norms and drop this investigation, so have the NYPD continued to stymie justice due to cyclists in our city by motorists. The cultural bias has been giving a bye to drivers involved in cycling accidents. It needs changing. Yes, I am preaching to the choir. We need to be firm on this issue. This bias is stubborn but the wheel can turn.

Another Edge 500 question re cadence.

Submitted by vinlaw on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 11:13am

I cannot see me cadence on my  bike computer when I am riding though I do get low cadence alerts. After my ride when I hook my  bike computer up to my laptop a cadence graph shows on my Garmin Connect page.

Can somebody tell me how to get my cadence to show on the bike computer when I am riding?

Thanks.

Vincent.

St Hooky's Day Ride - Thurs 22 Mar - 10 AM

Submitted by CCollins on Wed, 03/21/2012 - 10:07pm

Tomorrow is St Hooky's Day.

St Hooky is the patron saint of work/life balance, slackers, and the unemployed.

In honor of St Hooky's Day, and in gratitude for the 24 hours of spring we've just had that will, by tomorrow, be summer (high of 80 by 3pm),  I'm going to ride to Piermont-Nyack.

I'll be at the NJ side of the bridge at 10am sharp, and look forward to some company.  A-19/20ish pace.  9W express, but happy to do BT if there's interest.
