Rally for a Protected Fifth Avenue - Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6:15

Submitted by HSchachter on Sun, 10/01/2017 - 3:38pm

At a recent community board meeting, DOT made it clear that it envisions creating no new  pedestrian or cyclist safety features in this year's infrastructure work on Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan. Right now Fifth Avenue is a dangerous street that needs a protected bicycle lane and pedestrian-safety features. Transportation Alternatives is sponsoring a rally and protest on Fifth avenue and Fiftieth Street at 6:15  pm on Tuesday, October 10. Please come out and help make the city safer for all folks who bike and walk.

Don't you think the PA could allow us use of the path, at least on weekends, so long as there is no apparatus or materials obstructing the path since there is no work on weekends?

What a classy bunch of people are cyclists. At two points in the crossing today I extended 37 riders, well, climbers, coming towards me the courtesy of waiting...and waiting...and waiting for them when I might very well have inserted myself into the openings. And it was apparent to all of them that is what I was doing. So how many said "thank you"? 1.

Lights out in Central Park / outreach

Submitted by edeuser on Sat, 09/30/2017 - 2:32pm

There have been quite a few street lights out in the park recently. Seems like for the latter part of the season about 30-50% of the lights have been out between, say, Tavern and Harlem hill.  Maybe my memory is not serving me but it seems worse than in prior years, and if you ask me dangerous for pedestrians, runners and cyclists alike (even if you ride with a decent light).

Is there anyone we/the club can reach out to at either CP Conservancy or Parks Dept to find out what the issue is and when/if it's planned to be resolved? Or perhaps the subject has already been broached with them? If not I am happy to volunteer to spearhead this effort, just need some guidance on where to start.  Thanks.

Rockaways Ride Postponed

Submitted by CWaaser on Sat, 09/30/2017 - 6:04am

Rain is forecast for the Rockaways this afternoon, so I'm postponing the "Bike Your Park" ride to tomorrow.

My bike was stolen in Hamilton Heights Harlem on 9/27/17. It is a Giant Liv Avail Small Women's Road Bike, Matte Dark Purple Finish with Red-Pink Accents, Liv Connect Saddle and Drop Bars, Black Bar tape, Giant SR-2 Wheels 700x25c Tires, Shimano Click'R pedals. Two water bottle cages (one silver oversized and one black).

Alternatives to the North Side of the GW Bridge.

The north side of the GWB – the stairs – ugh – shoot me now and end my pain.

It’s dark!  Any suggestions on a headlight for those early AM loops in the park?  How many lumens does one need?
