Dualdrive internal hub-- advice?

Submitted by CMordas on Fri, 06/21/2013 - 7:04am

I'm building a Bike Friday for touring and the sales rep is suggesting using a SRAM Dualdrive internal gear hub instead of the triple chainring which on this bike would only give me max about 87 gear inches, whereas the internal hub would bring it up to about 105.  I'm not sure if I really care that much about the additional gear inches for the type of riding I'll be doing on this bike, but it would be nice to have...

My concerns are - how reliable are these hubs, how easy to get reliable repairs done if needed? If I'm overseas and the hub needs repairs am I out of luck?  Will I have to learn to fix a flat rear tire all over again?

Any advice, help with the pro's and con's would be welcome.

Saturday's Port Jervis post ride venue has been changed...

Submitted by HSchiffman on Wed, 06/19/2013 - 9:19pm

As the event webpage now states, the River Terrace is closed.

For those of you who wish to have drinks and dinner post ride, the new venue is the Patio at The Roundhouse, 2 East Main St, Beacon: http://www.roundhousebeacon.com

A manager explained that it will be casual dining on the patio. We can leave our bikes on the sidewalk within view. He said that diners have left their bikes here unlocked with no incident of theft.

Indonesian based web site Aviasa Sport is legit?

http://aviasa-sports.com/bike-wheels/mavic-wheels

Web search came up with the above website providing quite competetive prices.

However, I could not come up with any reviews or references on web. Address is in Indonesia. By default is pretty sketchy world region when it comes to credibility. Anyone have a similar experience?

Actually just confirmed it's a scam.

Do you bargain at Recycle-a-Bicycle?

Submitted by JFinder on Wed, 06/19/2013 - 11:23am

In a phone conversation, Recycle-a-Bicycle quoted me a rather high price for a used bike.  Let's not get into the details since I don't have any, not even the model year.

If we get down to the shop and like the bike, will they listen to a lower offer, or are their offers firm?

(Yes, I know they're a charitable institution, etc. etc.)
