Tire pressure
The age old question. Recent questions about tires has me looking at several things like differing tube types, tire structure. But I came across this study about proper tire inflation which I thought was interesting. If aiming for a 15% deflection of a tire, which according to the study is optimal, you'd shoot for differing tire pressures for front and back depending on riding style (ie weight distribution). I usually go 110/120psi and call it good; which the 10psi protocal seems to be common knowledge. However it would be more on a linear curve, which makes sense based on the weight on the tire.
Route 501 (Bergen County NJ) aka Piermont Rd/County Rd news
Has reopened and the detour between Paris and Broadway (Norwood-Rockleigh) is finished. Closter will be welcoming Whole Foods in the K Mart center behind Annie Sez. Scuttlebut has it that Tenafly's Cafe Angelique is looking at the old Farm bldg at Piermont & Homans for a new location. The prior operator has relocated to the Annie Sez center. It has Giant Bikes and plans to offer NYCC members a club discount. Had a nice lunch, not $$$ at Simply Vietnamese 1 Highwood Ave Tenafly, outdoor tables. No Friday morning rides
How come there are no Friday morning Rides??
speed equivalent for listing
Yes, I know the Central Park Self-test but meanwhile I did the length of the Dutchess County Rail Trail yesterday with a 20-23 mph headwind. Even on the flat sections where a glance at my Garmin claimed < 0.5% grade, on pretty good asphalt pavement, I couldn't get above about 16 mph pushing as hard as I could (and in an efficient gear with appropriate cadence). Up the 2% grades, I slowed to even 14 mph. These results are solo, not drafting. What is the equivalent speed you would think I would have accomplished in calm conditions on level ground? 18 mph? More? I'm planning a ride in the same area for May 18th and concerned over listing it as B18 if I couldn't maintain even 17 mph yesterday. I figure a sustained slope of 2% in calm conditions is worth 1.5 - 2 mph.
Continental GatorSkin tires???
Info on an old Schwinn bike?
My friend is cleaning out the garage of his dad who passed away last year. Inside, he found this bike which looks very special, and he's asked me to see if anyone knows about it. It even has a serial number!
Caution on 9W south of Bear Mtn Bridge
From George Arcarola:
"The picture was taken about a mile south of the Bear Mtn Bridge in the southbound lane. It's a curvy descending section that encourages high speed. Speed which should be avoided until repairs are made. Most of the holes are 3-5" deep. We had two go to the hospital on Saturday."
