River Road this Sunday 5/3

Submitted by DHudes on Mon, 04/27/2015 - 5:42pm

FYI: there is a half-marathon (along with a 5K and 6K) starting from Ross Dock and going to at least the Alpine Boat Basin this Sunday morning in Palisades Park. There are events in the afternoon but they are confined to e.g. boat basin. I recommend avoiding River Road this Sunday morning.

PIPC had multiple notices and signs out yesterday that this was coming Sunday May 3rd and it is featured prominently on the front page of the website, with link to event specifics for details. The event is a fund-raiser for the park.

Training on a Trainer Questions

Submitted by johnvic on Mon, 04/27/2015 - 7:48am

Does anyone here use CycleOps trainers?

I have been doing simple intervals with some YouTube videos and I also do 30 minute light spinning for recovery days. It's been good but I want to focus on climbing. I'm an okay climber but lose energy after a good climb. Hardscrabble killed me! I got the CTS DVD for Climbing. Should I do it a few days in a row or do you skip days like you do with weight training?

Any training at home advice is appreciated.

Rides going over Skyline Drive had been unpublished in the Ride Library out of concern of safety.

Can someone report on the current status?

I went and checked out the Red Hook Crit last night.

OMG, BADASS!

If you haven't been (or even if you have), check out the video I made from the final two races.

Placing bikes on seats on Metro North trains

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sun, 04/26/2015 - 6:08pm

When trains are not crowded, the train can accommodate our bikes safely when we place them on seats. If an emergency was to arise and the train had to be evacuated quickly, the bikes could stay where they are and not interfere with passengers evacuating the train.

However, it has come to my attention that there are concerns about grease and dirt, possibly be left behind by contact with moving parts to seats.

We NYCC members need to be scrupulous as ambassadors of cycling to our greater community.

Therefore the problem needs to be addressed by one of 2 ways:

Carry newspaper, or any disposable paper, to place between any moving/greasy/dirty parts of the bike and seat.

Question about van cortland park bike path

Submitted by kommie on Sat, 04/25/2015 - 11:21am

I am seeking info about this park's  bike path.  I ride with my son,who is  teenager. I am thinking of riding the Van Cortland Park trail north from the south end of the park.  I would like to know:

Is the trail hilly, or a dfficult ride? We are casual cylists riding hybrid bikes.  We can do a 30 mile, reasonaby flat, ride.   I assume that it is safe. How crowded is it on  nice weekend morning?

When we get to the north end of park, I think we can connect with other parks. How do the parks connect?  Will we need to ride in traffic?

How far north can we go before we get to the end, or to some hills that casual cyclists would consider challenging?   I have looked at maps, but it is unclear

CP Police renew their preferential enforcement policies

Submitted by AResnick on Thu, 04/23/2015 - 3:46pm

For the last 3 days I have witnessed cyclists being stopped by CP police for going thru red lights.  I have also avoided dozens of pedestrians "space walking" thru red lights; with the GREEN light in my direction-with no police intervention.  Just like last year.

Why don't the police consider our safety from pedestrian fault?
