Commute from Westchester?

Submitted by Trabbit on Sat, 05/02/2015 - 11:28pm

Hey all!

I currently live in Inwood but am considering moving up to Westchester and commuting into the city 3 days a week (3x 12.5 hour schedule). Does anyone use the South County Trailway to come down from the Tarrytown or Ossining area?

How do you feel about riding through Van Cortland Park and the upper parts of Harlem River Drive or the greenway in the dark (5:30am or after 8pm)? Is it safe for a person riding alone or have folks had issues with opportunists?

And, is there a group of folks who ever meet up to commute together into the city from that area?

Thanks ahead of time for any insights!

Hardenburgh between Anderson and County Road is blocked

Submitted by GRoss on Sat, 05/02/2015 - 8:32pm

Maybe this was posted before, but we found out today that Hardenburgh just south of Anderson, has a bridge under contstruction and the road is blocked. So if you're heading to Knickerbocker or Schralenburg on Hardenburgh, find another way to get to County Road. we just went over to Closter Dock Road and then doubled back, which wasn't ideal, but worked.

The detour around the bridge construction on Oak Tree in Tappan is very well marked so that's no big deal.

I've written you (now twice) to change our start location due to CP's invasion by the 5-Boro/Bike New Yorkers. I asked each of you to write me in return to let me know you got my note. Two of you have. Maybe you others read the MB more than your e-mail. (Don't even talk to me about texting.) So, here's the message again: 9:45. CPW @ 72nd  St. (I'll leave to you how you get from east to west.)

Social Sunday 5/3/15

Submitted by nymultisport on Fri, 05/01/2015 - 3:28pm

Marilyn and Ken are riding the Bronx waterfront Sunday, around/through a group of old/new parks to a picnic lunch at Orchard Beach. Concrete Plant Park, Soundview Park, Shorehaven Bikepath, Kane's Park, Pugsley Creek Park, Castle Hill Park, Ferry Point Park, SUNY Maritime College and Pelham Bay Park are on the agenda.

Easy touring pace - ~30 miles outbound, ~10-12 return via Pelham Parkway Bike Path. We'd enjoy having a few friends along.

Descents in the area....

Anyone have recommendations for some good multi-mile downhills? Descending from Bear being obvious, Storm King into Cornwall...Thanks in advance!
