wider rim wheels should not be using 23mm tires -- use 25mm or more

Submitted by RLMeyer on Tue, 06/16/2015 - 2:31pm

There has been a trend in recent years towards wheels with wider internal rims (17+mm).  There has also been a trend towards wider tires.  I had switched to 25mm tires on my wider rims for a smoother ride.  What I didn't realize until I changed tires today and saw a new warning included with the new tires was that 23mm tires should not be used with the wider rims for safety reasons.  If you have the wider rims you should use a minimum of 25mm.  (note you can use 25mm tires on narrow rims)  The table below was referenced:

Ultegra Hood design ST-6500 vs ST-6600

Submitted by Rmarcus on Mon, 06/15/2015 - 7:45pm

Are the 9 speed ST6500 shifter hoods the same or very close to the 10 speed ST-6600?

I am thinking of just swapping the right shifter to bring the set-up to 10 speed.

Yes I know the 6600 shifters are pretty cheap online, but I have a line on just the right shifter at a bargain.

Thanks

Robert

weekday later morning A riders?

Submitted by sshockett on Mon, 06/15/2015 - 11:08am

Wondering who's available for mon/wedn later a.m. river road runs? I'd like to get a regular crew together. Starting from NJ side of the bridge at 7:30 or 8. May alternate mon and wedn.

I've listed one for this wednesday: http://nycc.org/node/75486

Speed is set at 20 but could be faster on the flats, depending on the group.

Step up and lead a ride.If you don't feel comfortable leading on your own, contact me or a ride coordinator and we will pair you with an experienced leader.

Leading a ride is not difficult and is fun:

Strava app trouble

Submitted by DHudes on Fri, 06/12/2015 - 6:32pm

I'm interested in hearing from anyone else who is having trouble, especially intermittent trouble, getting rides recorded with the Strava app on one's smartphone to sync to Strava's server. Support denies this is a widespread problem but they have a FAQ for it on their support page (logout then login; sounds reasonable until you realize you can't login again for days).

Bikes on LIRR?

Submitted by scottkobetis on Fri, 06/12/2015 - 5:59pm

I'm doing the Long Island Tour De Cure tomorrow and planning to take the LIRR back to the city from Southold. The LIRR website says bikes are limited to only 8 per train and there's only 1 train back from Southold that afteroon. Any idea what I should expect? Is the 8 bike limit strongly enforced?
