2 Free things for cyclists--both acts of great, great kindness.

Submitted by RRosenthal on Sun, 07/16/2017 - 6:54pm

1.

On Saturdays on the north side of The Market's parking lot is a large black tent. Under it is a pro-mechanic who will work on your bike for free courtesy of R&A Cycle in Brooklyn. There, in addition to the mechanic, is Aldo Diaz, manager of R&A, who oversees this. And, no, not a word, not a single word of sales or promotion. Not about anything. Unless YOU bring it up.

2.

In Englewood Cliffs (400 Douglas, near the top of Speer, an exceedingly challenging uphill), the Grossmans leave out flats of bottled water by their front door and invite you to take what you need, no questions asked, no thanks necessary; just take as you need and deposit the bottles in their recycling bin.

Should I go for disk brakes in my next bike?

Submitted by muanis on Sun, 07/16/2017 - 8:11am

Thinking about my next (2nd) bike. Since I'll keep my current Spz Allez, I'm thinking about staying with calipers since I can still swap wheels with my old bike and with my wife.

Are disks really a huge benefit? In special on the routes we do here? 9w, bear mountain etc?

Looking for route from Brooklyn to Patchogue

Submitted by JoyMesser on Thu, 07/13/2017 - 8:56am

Hi! I found an NYCC cue sheet that covers Babylon to Patchogue. Wondering if anyone has any route info for Brooklyn to Babylon. There's always Googlemaps, but I would prefer a route that tried and true.  Thanks!! Joy

How often should I change a tire?

Hi,

macaskills wee day out

Submitted by GKaplan on Wed, 07/12/2017 - 3:54pm

Be sure to watch to the very end - toward the last, when he's sitting on a bench talking to another man, it fades to black and you think it's finished. Not so! Keep watching the bloopers at the end.

Regarding the GWB moveable barriers

Submitted by NWeissman on Wed, 07/12/2017 - 3:29pm

Since I'd been asked to look at the placement of the moveable barriers on the NJ-side of the GWB, here's what I've been able to determine:

- The barriers are set about 4 feet from the opposing fencing.

- That exceeds the 36" required by ADA Standards (search for "403.5.1").

- So if the deal struck by TA, NJBWC, et al was to maintain ADA access for the seven years of construction, as well as on the permanent facility, then the PA is keeping up its end.
