Dumpling Ride to Uma's - Sunday - canceled

Submitted by LWintner on Sat, 01/19/2019 - 11:48pm

Sorry  - the rain, gale force winds, and falling temps are too much.

Maybe we'll have better weather for next week's Galaxy ride.  Hope to see you then.

Anyone have word on when registration will reopen... other than what’s posted- “Early 2019” ?

The difference between the Trump & Obama admins. from a cycling perspective.

It was just announced Sec. of Education Betsy DeVos broke her hip socket and pelvis in a bike accident a couple weeks ago. (Her injury hadn't been thought that severe. She is in a wheelchair). At least then Sec. of State John Kerry only broke his femur in his bike crash near Geneva in 2015.

Mallorca vs Girona

Submitted by bespandorf on Wed, 01/16/2019 - 9:46pm

Does anyone know if Stephen Roche is still operating their bike camp in Mallorca?
The website has not been updated from 2018 and emails have been only occasionally responded to
with promises that the site will be updated soon...

Are there other bike camps that people have enjoyed in Mallorca?  Girona?  Canary Islands?

thanks!

entering Central Park at 6th Ave or W 72nd

Submitted by HBorgeson on Wed, 01/16/2019 - 7:39pm

With cars no longer driving into Central Park, the street entrances at both 6th Avenue/CPS and West 72nd Street/CPW have been reconfigured to force cars to turn right or left leaving no STRAIGHT lane going into the park. I end up threading the line -- and it is just a line -- in the middle of the lanes. Coupled with the heavy pedestrian traffic once you get through the intersection to the park, it feels very unsafe to me, and yet I keep having to do it.

We already lost the 8th Avenue entrance entirely years ago after it was closed to cars, and now we have no safe uptown entrance at 6th Avenue either. How are people managing these intersections? Should we reach out to DOT to request improvements?

To Diverge or to Something Else

Submitted by mledavis on Tue, 01/15/2019 - 12:26am

I'm slowly shopping for a multi-surface bike that I can take camping. I've narrowed down the Specialized Diverge as being a fairly good balance of weight, utility, and function for the cost. I know a bunch of people in the club have them - recall aside, and regrets about your purchase? Or recommendations?

I have also test ridden some of the steel bikes (Kona, Niner), and am curious about the Warbird (unavailable, posssibly also out on recall) - but the Diverge is substancially cheaper, so I'm trying to talk myself into it.

Or out of it. :)

Champion Bicycle Shop Rating/Experience with

I need to have a bike set up.  My doctor recommended Champion Bicycle Shop on Amsterdam Ave. Have you had your bike serviced at Champion Bicycle?  If so, how do you rate them?
