Coming from Manhattan towards Queens all seemed fine until you are actually above the river. Once that happens the  entire span becomes  a sheet of ice, EXCEPT a pathway along the fence which is the outer portion away from the cars. This small pathway is VERY usable as long as there are few bikers of pedestrians.

I trully doubt any melt for days and there was no sign of DOT salting the bike/walkway. This bridge is always bad due to the fact that the sun swings away after about 9am.

Not sure yet how I will go home and really do not want to go South to the WillyB and will shoot myself before I take the Triboro and the steps. I am sure that would be the worse of options.

We are a "go" but the winds are still between 14-17 today, so the speed will be adjusted accordingly.  If you're out to hammer, this ride is not for you!  See you at 11.

As of my ride today, GWB has about a 100yrd patch just after the 180degree turn that is a mix of slush/ice.  the rest of the bridge to nj is like a wet sidewalk with some slush here and there.  9w is clear on the roads with slush/snow on the shoulder but was melting as the day progressed.

I would expect GWB to be primarily clear as well as 9w tomorrow given the amount of sunlight and conditions on my return.  Although, caution should be exercised for patches of ice given the time of day.

Anyone know someone in NYC who repairs bike clothing?   I have two good technical jackets that need new zippers.   I remember seeing something here once.

I'm an ex-NYCC member. "Ex" primarily because I moved from NYC to Olivebridge in the foothills of the Catskills. I've been riding out here for years, and finally took the plunge and moved two weeks before the hurricane destroyed South Street Seaport, my former home.

Just wanted to let you know that I've started a blog where I'm posting all of my routes out here in the mountains, many of them conveniently mapped from Metro North train stations, including cue sheets and GPS. I'm just getting started, but I have dozens of routes to post so there will be lots more coming up.

Apparently the weather gods are conspiring against me…

But today’s precipitation + tonight’s temperatures + tomorrow’s wind = very high likelihood of ice on the roads. That’s just not something I look forward to subjecting this group to. Or any group of cyclists, really.

So hopefully this gives you all enough advance warning to make other plans for Sunday. And if perchance all the weather predictions are completely off base and we miraculously get a sunny 60° day that dries up the roads by noon, maybe I’ll see you out on the bike after all.

The annual Polar Pancakes ride will go out again this year on New Years Day to eat pancakes/waffles/whatever and cheer on the Coney Island Polar Bear Club in their annual swim. As has sometimes happened over the years, this year is forecast to have fairly chilly temperatures: currently, forecast to 17F with wind chill under partly-sunny skies at 1PM. So come along for the ride with Ken Williams and myself but please dress warm. I personally intend to break out the silk base layer and double up my new wool NYCC jersey with a Pearl Izumi Winter Slice jersey as well as a jacket. Both the wool AND the silk glove liners as well as winter boots with wool socks and silk sock liners for me!

The presumption being that plowed dirt roads with overnight freezing should provide for some pretty decent snow-ice cycling. The "necessities" include a mountain bike with disc brakes, lights, fenders and heavily studded tires.  Plus winter apparel-footwear:
