2 sad long pieces in Sunday's Times re bicycling fatalties

Submitted by JJacobson on Sun, 04/01/2012 - 5:38pm

p. 6 Intl News Section:  Son of Brazil's richest man, driving $1,000,000  car, fatally strikes poor man who was riding his bike.

p. 11 Nephew of woman cyclist who was struck and killed by a truck in Greenpoint, Brooklyn relates emotional visits to accident site and flower-bedecked ghost bike.

There was no apparently definitive culpability in either case.

Three beautiful sights on today's B-STS

I rode the first half on my own, since I missed the start by an hour due to multiple detours on the subway. A very nice route, to Rockland Lake via 9W & Bradley. At Bradley you turn left on Schuyler and confront a short mean hill. With a nice descent that made me whoop.

1) As I was passing a pond to the right, two LARGE geese took flight at head level. I ducked (no pun intended) and missed them. But I could feel their heavy soft bodies whir past just so close. Fortunately I do not possess  a jet engine, and there was no catastrophe.

2) Dave, in his matching NYCC jerseys. I actually caught up with his group as it was leaving Rockland Lake!

New bike: Cannondale Synapse OR Giant Defy?

Submitted by davisjiang on Sat, 03/31/2012 - 9:50pm

Hi,

I am in the market for a new bike. I am looking at the (1) Cannondale Synapse Carbon 6 OR (2) Giant Defy Composite 3. In terms of price, I can purchase (1) at REI for $1899 and (2) at Toga Bike for $1850.

My main requirement is that the bike should offer a comfortable ride -- especially on long rides on bumpy roads.

I understand that it depends on fit. So I'll test ride both bike.

For now, I am wondering given the specs on the bikes, and your experience, what are your suggestions? pros/cons?

Thanks!

Sunday B SIG will START 30 MINUTES EARLY

Submitted by WWright on Sat, 03/31/2012 - 1:38pm

The B SIG will begin tomorrow at 8:30 instead of 9:00.

Same start location:  The Ramble Shed in Central Park

Starting a half-hour early last week seemed to work, so we'll try it again this week.  Again, if you have a rain jacket or shell, please bring it, as well as a fender if you have one.

See you in the Park,

Wayne
