Winter riding gear post?

Submitted by GoJaqs on Thu, 01/05/2023 - 8:51am

Is there any way to find the long and useful post a year or so ago about what to wear on winter rides? I don't see a search feature for this Forum.

It is that time of year where we build a database of train requests for Sig & STS rides on Metro North, NJ Transit & LIRR.

We request that each group select a point person to add their group's train requests to the shared documents. This is an endeavor where first come/first served has worked in the past. Exceptions arise and these need to be hammered out among the competing groups for overlapping spots. We request timely diligence by being proactive and seeing your requests through. Put in another way: don't procrastinate and see the project thru to the end.

Thus, Sig & STS captains: choose your representatives, work on your ride schedules, and enter your train requests on the shared documents.

No More Dark Sky

I didn't think I would miss a "weather" web page, but I'm not liking the weather channel's TMI app that's taken over my home screen.

What's the next best thing people are using? I loved the Dark Sky hyper-local precipitation map that tracked direction, speed, and the edge of the "drizzle starting in 5 minutes".

I have the NOAA charts already, which are useful for cross referencing.

Gear swap

Submitted by philipleff on Tue, 01/03/2023 - 12:06pm

Hi folks,

I have a few small items that I'd like to donate to the gear swap but I won't be able to make it to next Tuesday's meeting. Is there anyone who will be going that I can drop them off with?

thanks!

Rim brake pads that are plastic-y, not rubber-y?

Submitted by isaacb on Mon, 01/02/2023 - 6:03pm

Hi:

I just bought a lightly-used, 2006, entry-level road bike. The brake pads feel hard, rather than rubbery, so I assumed that I'll replace them. So, I took off one pad and it's different from what I'm used to. (Mind you, last bike I bought was in 1994 and had solid rubber pads.) This has a metal carrier, with pad that's replaceable. The calipers appear to be "no-name", but the insert is marked "m55/r." I slipped the insert out of the holder and it feels like it's made of plastic, rather than rubber. The rims seem to be aluminum (Alex 450.) So, I'm wondering if pad materials have changed and this is what it's supposed to feel like. Thanks.
