Submitted by wasifzaman on Wed, 02/22/2017 - 10:11am

Found this black scarf (see link for pictures) on the February 14th club meeting at Connolly's. I asked everyone I knew seated at the table. Please let me know if it's yours.

At the best of times, the Central Park transverses are dicey. Narrow. Dark. Cars close. At 4PM the light was not good. The pot hole was.

Port Authority Will Widen Bike Pinch Points Around GWB Towers - Streetsblog

Submitted by NWeissman on Sat, 02/18/2017 - 7:51am

The Port Authority announced plans yesterday to add some breathing room for biking and walking around the towers on the George Washington Bridge [PDF]. Currently the paths narrow and jog around the towers at tight angles — the new “wedges” will make for a more comfortable ride.

Empire State Trail> Tappan Zee> GWB

On Thursday, February 16, Susan Rodetis, quoting from Governor Cuomo’s Mid-Hudson State of the State Address, asked the PA to consider the GWB’s impact on regional cycle tourism. Between the Empire State Trail and the new Tappan Zee Bridge, New York will invest $500 million dollars to grow active transportation in the Hudson Valley. Yet bicycle tourism could show a net decline if an overcrowded GWB ceased to function as a cycling facility.

If you've thought about joining the SIG this year, we still have some openings for a C SIG Preview Ride on Saturday to New Jersey. The ride will be about 35 miles at a casual 13 mph pace. We'll be offering tips and coaching so you can get an idea of what to expect from the C SIG.

For those unfamiliar with the signup process you can find the ride listed under Rides/Events and click on upcoming rides.

Big win today from the PA for riders on the GWB!!!

Submitted by Cyndi on Thu, 02/16/2017 - 4:10pm

Today the Port Authority Board of Commssioners approved at their monthly meeting our request to make the paths around the towers on the GWB ridable! We requested that the paths go around the towers rather than us being relegated to walking our bikes in these areas, per PA policy. Our request was included in the 10-year capital plan and will become part of the "Restoring the George" project, which is our earlier win (March 2014) for new entrances at all four ends of the paths. That win also included the removal of all 171 steps on the north path, the removal of the hairpin on the south path, new pedestrian/ride staging areas at both ends of the bridge,  dedicated bicycle path on one side of the bridge, and suicide fencing, totaling $118 million.
