Volunteers Needed: Newcomers Ride Prep Crew, Sat., June 10th

Submitted by nycgabby on Tue, 05/30/2017 - 3:01pm

Please consider volunteering to help out at the Newcomers Ride on Saturday, June 10th.

You get to help set up lunch and also feed many hungry cyclists. It is fun. What's more, we've organized a low-key ride to and from the picnic area. Sign up for it here: https://nycc.org/node/83204

Flip a chainring?

Submitted by PStorey on Tue, 05/30/2017 - 11:07am

I recently replaced my chain, and a couple of months ago, my cassette. Now I notice that the chain skips on the middle chain ring of my triple (where I spend 95% of my time). This tells me the chain ring is worn out. I estimate the ring has about 4,000 miles on it.

I seem to recall hearing once upon a time that if a chain ring is worn out, you can flip it over and wear the other side of the teeth for a while. Has anyone ever tried this? Does it work? Is there any reason not to try it? A new  ring will set me back at least $75, and being preternaturally cheap, I'd rather get some more life out of the existing one, if I can.

All thoughts welcome.

Peter Storey

The weather gods are conspiring against us, so we are postponing this ride for 365 days -- till next year.

What to do if you can't cross the Palisades (7 Lakes to Bear Mountain)

Submitted by iforst on Sun, 05/28/2017 - 1:30pm

We had the misfortune of getting stopped by the police before entering the Palisades. We were told in no uncertain terms that there was no way they'd let us cross over. After trying to flag down a pickup truck to carry our bikes to the Bear Mountain exit, we gave in and climbed back up 7 lakes to Tiorati Circle. The notion of riding back home the way we came was not popular. Fortunately, Douwe found train station in Harriman, only 7 miles away. You can see the route here

I'd recommend saving this on your phone/bike computer as there's limited cell signal in that area.

P.S. Arden Valley Rd is beautiful!

Recognition of the risks posed by UV rays has motivated scientists to study what’s going on in our cells when they’re in the sun— and devise modern ways to ward off that damage.

This really doesn't talk to you but...https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/26/realestate/cyclists-where-to-live-in-new-york.html

So long as I'm putting this on the MB, I seize on the opportunity to give my impression/report of my first full-on ClimBathon of the year...actually since last October.

Help please: looking for a route from Brooklyn to Somerset,NJ

Submitted by robertfcallagha... on Sat, 05/27/2017 - 7:39am

Hi fellow riders,

greetings from the UK

My son and I am riding down the East Coast from Boston to Orlando in September. So far we are stopping at Providence, New London, Centerport and Brooklyn and will be meeting our USA resident family on the Saturday evening.

On Sunday 9/10 we are looking to get to Somerset NJ via a visit to the 9/11 memorial in the morning.

The roads and bridges through Jersey look daunting and whilst I appreciate it is an adjoining state I wonder whether any of you can recommend a route for the first 10/15 miles

many thanks

Didn't want to derail the Long Beach/Point Lookout thread. But it hit one of the area I wasn't too sure of.

Like others, I don't always ride perfectly legally: not dismounting on bridges with signs "Cyclist Dismount" being one of such. Other typical infraction is short stretch on the wrong direction, roads that are technically closed for construction etc.
