GFNY - Getting to the start

Submitted by neil_e_whitfiel... on Thu, 04/25/2019 - 12:46pm

Hi all, Apologies if this has been covered in other threads.

I'm doing the GFNY this year (my first full century - eek) but I live in Chelsea, so about 9 miles from the start. Does anyone have any advice for getting to the start without putting 9 miles onto my legs before the start gun? I'm really new to NY so was hoping to pick the collective NYCC brain.

What is it like on the day for Subways? It's a crazy early start so will they be running? Can you chuck a road bike in an Uber XL?

Really appreciate any thoughts, I'm happy to be pointed a pre-existing thread (I did look first! promise!).

Thanks, Neil

Why not make both jersey's available?

Submitted by BVan Nieuwenhoven on Thu, 04/25/2019 - 9:29am

There's a spread of about 50 total votes between the two jerseys in the runoff contest right now. The same supplier (who created either design) is providing the jerseys.

Would there be an issue with selling or making available both designs, even if just temporarily?

If it's just a little bit of money, that should not be a huge blocker on the issue.

Dangerous parades on bike way: moshiach parade

Submitted by SSafier on Wed, 04/24/2019 - 7:16pm

I'll preface this post with, "I am Jewish".

I've encountered this event for several years, and it is simply dangerous.  Let me explain.  Apparently at Passover the Chasidich stage a "bike parade" on the West Side bike Parade to about 55th St, where they rally.  They attach large flags to their bikes that whip in the wind (see http://moshiachtime.com/parade-bikes/).  They are not cyclist, cannot hold a line, cross into oncoming traffic and have no marshals controlling either their flow (they often break into random groups), or interactions with other cyclists.

MAMIL II? New Cycling Documentary: May 8th

Submitted by PStorey on Wed, 04/24/2019 - 6:47pm

I received the following today. Kurt Broadhag has produced a new documentary on  the Race Across America. As With MAMIL a year or so ago, Regal Cinemas will show it, if enough tickets are sold in advance. At this writing, he needs to sell 30 more. Disclaimer: I have not seen the film, nor have I previously heard of the director. But from the plug, it sounds like it could be good.

Our own NYCC lifetime member, Carol Waaser, is also a lifetime member of Adventure Cycling.  There is a wonderful article about Carol in the May 2019 issue of Adventure Cycling.

If you haven't had the pleasure of doing a ride with Carol yet, I highly recommend it.

CONGRATULATIONS CAROLyes

Looking for Friendly Local Bike Store in Manhattan

Submitted by Elfabba on Tue, 04/23/2019 - 7:04pm

I keep on having to have my Shimano 105 front derailleur adjusted to prevent chain rub.  I wish I could do it myself but I only make it worse. sad Any recommendations for a good and friendly shop/mechanic who could adjust and maybe show me how to do it myself? Anywhere in Manhattan would be great.

Is it possible to love Trump and Campy at the same time?

Submitted by RRosenthal on Mon, 04/22/2019 - 2:44pm

If you love them both, the cost for your love is going up: Trump just announced a 100% tariff increase that applies to EU alloy hubs and "sprockets," i.e. cassettes.

(I'm in the clear: I love neither.)
