South County Trailways sections on either side of Mile Square Rd is now paved

Submitted by HSchiffman on Sat, 11/12/2011 - 10:16pm

Truly a long time coming, we have liftoff. Leaves and some small branches festoon it but the asphalt beneath is smooth and easy to ride.

This is a big plus to cyclists of all stripes. Faster cyclists will be astonished how quickly they can progress north on a dedicated, direct path without motor traffic. More measured cyclists will prosper on the railroad grade while not worrying about vehicular vicissitudes. All comers will appreciate seeing the world from the railroad perspective. Unlike road travel, with commerical overtones, the rail trail is closer to the Appalachian Trail than blue highways.

4 Hills in 3 Hours, Sunday, November 13

Submitted by JFinder on Sat, 11/12/2011 - 8:12am

If the GWB is going to be clogged with Girl Scouts Sunday morning (see other thread), I may change our meeting point, and may change the ride to a lunch ride to Scarsdale.

The Scarsdale route also has hills (although they're "not like Kennedy," as Gov. Connelly might have put it).

Check the message board late Saturday to see what we learn about the Girl Scouts.

"5,000 Girl Scouts on the GWB on Sunday"

Submitted by ROrvedahl on Fri, 11/11/2011 - 7:12pm

I got a press release this afternoon with this headline:  "Thousands of Girl Scouts to Cross the GWB to Kick Off the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting...Sunday Nov 13, 2011."  I emailed the publicist to ask if they'd made arrangements with the Port Authority to permit cyclists & pedestrians to get across - but heard nothing back.  The fun starts at 9 am!   The info below is from their media alert:

Tired of riding alone up a dark 1st Ave.

Submitted by Downtube on Fri, 11/11/2011 - 9:43am

If anyone is regularly riding to CP for laps and wants to share a ride up 1st Ave. I would love some company. The recent spat of accidents has me thinking twice about the wisdom of doing this ride daily alone. I leave at 5:30 from 14th and 1st. I typically ride a B17 pace but will adjust either direction as needed.
