First multi-day trip/ tour advice NYC -> Charlotte, NC

Submitted by mchapman154 on Tue, 06/04/2013 - 2:51pm

Hi guys,

I'm planning my first multi day trip as a kind of 'credit-card' tour (no camping) down the east cost towards Charlotte. I was wonding if I could show you my route and ask if more seasoned tourers have any advice/warnings/suggestions before I head off this Saturday

I'm planning on spending the first couple of nights at friends houses and after that at motels. I've plotted roughly 60-80 miles per day depending on the hills. My route is based on the East Coast Greenway (http://www.greenway.org/index.shtml) but if anyone has ideas for beter routes, or for things that I shouldn't miss on the way.

River Road Closed Sunday June 9

Submitted by RChiu on Tue, 06/04/2013 - 11:08am

Was on River Road this morning and there was a sign saying the park would be closed on Sunday, June 9 from 6am-12pm because of the GWB Challange.  This is a bike, walk, run event.  If the weater reports are to be believed, then Sunday looks like the best day for riding, so just giving you a heads up in case your route plans take you to River Road.

Tel-O-Fun?

Submitted by jzisfein on Tue, 06/04/2013 - 9:02am

I'll be in Tel Aviv this Saturday with 1 day to see the city. Bad news it's Shabbat and most buses will not be running. Is the bike share (which is open Saturday) a reasonable option? Has anyone done this?

And Paul Krugman weighs in...

Be warned, it IS trivial and time-wasting... and quite amusing too!

Ask the Next Mayor a Question

Submitted by GeorgeArcarola on Tue, 06/04/2013 - 8:11am

In today's NYT, Andrew Rosenthal, the editorial page editor who oversees the editorial board, the letters and Op-Ed departments, and Sunday Review, is asking for some help:

"The Editorial Board would like your help. New York City is getting a new mayor, and we’re getting ready to decide — from a field of about a dozen candidates — who we think it should be.

Lasting Impact

Submitted by GeorgeArcarola on Mon, 06/03/2013 - 5:35pm

Take a look at the 'A' ride listings for the next several weeks. There are seven 'A' rides this coming weekend, seven more on the following weekend, and then six on the one after that. The last weekend in June has only two 'A' rides listed, but space for 60+ cyclists on those two rides (both rides are already filled).

Every single one of these rides are being led by club members who participated in the A-STS, the A-Classic SIG and the A-SIG this past spring.

Talk about a lasting impact from some of the NYCC's most succesful programs... wow...

I tip my helmet in salute to these folks. Thank you!

Chips on the road?

Submitted by JFinder on Mon, 06/03/2013 - 4:50pm

On a recent ride, with healthy and strong NYCC members, I was surprised that many of my fellow riders just bought chips and a drink at our lunch stop.  It was a hot day if that matters.

This was completely new to me.

How many of you eschew even the least bit of protein (if I understand the theory here), and stick with carbs and fats at your lunch stops?

Wheelset Purchase Advice Please

Submitted by RTorok on Mon, 06/03/2013 - 10:26am

I am in the market for a new wheelset and am seeking advice.

I currently have Mavic Elite's which I have been using for the past five years without any issues whatsover.  I am now looking for a performance upgrade (as it seems to be the more convenient, albeit more expensive, way to go than to make the effort to improve my fitness...).  I am a bit overwhelmed by what's out there.

Things I am taking into consideration:

- I am seeking a good all-around wheel (I am not looking for a dedicated climbing or time-trial wheel); I intend to use these wheels for longer club rides (ie. 80-100 miles; 6-10k climbing) and put on appx 5k miles/yr;  I do not intend to race.

Garmin Edge Advice?

Submitted by mchapman154 on Mon, 06/03/2013 - 9:38am

Hi Guys, I was wondering if I could ask some advice about the myriad options available within the Garmin Edge range of cyclecomputers...

I'm going to head off soon on my first solo tour and, after seeing someone elses Edge in action, I thought it would make a great replacement for cue sheets... but now I'm not sure which one to get...

As I say, I'd like to be able to upload a direction file of some sort and have it tell me where to go but I'm hearing conflicting information about which models this is possible with.  Does anyone own a 200 or 500 and can they advise if that's possible or is that only possible on the (hugely more expesive!) 800?
