Metro-North Kills Their Last Bar Cars

A bit of levity in this otherwise sad story: "The bar cars have been something of a unicorn for many Metro-North riders."

Tire pressure

Submitted by SReynolds on Mon, 05/05/2014 - 8:44pm

The age old question. Recent questions about tires has me looking at several things like differing tube types, tire structure. But I came across this study about proper tire inflation which I thought was interesting. If aiming for a 15% deflection of a tire, which according to the study is optimal, you'd shoot for differing tire pressures for front and back depending on riding style (ie weight distribution). I usually go 110/120psi and call it good; which the 10psi protocal seems to be common knowledge. However it would be more on a linear curve, which makes sense based on the weight on the tire.

speed equivalent for listing

Submitted by DHudes on Mon, 05/05/2014 - 1:22pm

Yes, I know the Central Park Self-test but meanwhile I did the length of the Dutchess County Rail Trail yesterday with a 20-23 mph headwind. Even on the flat sections where a glance at my Garmin claimed < 0.5% grade, on pretty good asphalt pavement, I couldn't get above about 16 mph pushing as hard as I could (and in an efficient gear with appropriate cadence).  Up the 2% grades, I slowed to even 14 mph. These results are solo, not drafting. What is the equivalent speed you would think I would have accomplished in calm conditions on level ground? 18 mph? More? I'm planning a ride in the same area for May 18th and concerned over listing it as B18 if I couldn't maintain even 17 mph yesterday. I figure a sustained slope of 2% in calm conditions is worth 1.5 - 2 mph.

Continental GatorSkin tires???

Submitted by mannuuel on Mon, 05/05/2014 - 12:16pm
After getting too many flats on the road, I decided to ask around to see what people thought the best tires in the market were. Club members seem to be the happiest with Continental Gatorskins... so I decided to make the switch. Well, after about 200 miles, and during the B-SIG graduation ride - *KPOW*, my back tire exploded and it became irreparable. The side wall was destroyed. I had to call a cab and then figure out a bus back to Manhattan from Bear Mountain area. I thought that perhaps there was something wrong with the tire and decided to replace it with the exact same thing. UGH, I should have done some research beforehand. I found some people online claiming that this exact thing happened to them on the road.
