A23 STS Whippoorwill, Roaring Brook, Hardscrabble ride
Please note errors were corrected on my cue sheet since I posted this originally.
You may proceed with the revolution...
"I love this thread. Either I am talking with myself or I am the last person in the world. Whatever.
The final cue sheet for this ride is now on the Ride Library under the title: ""N White Plains,Whippoorwill, Roaring Brook, Croton Dam, Hardscrabble, NYC ."" For those looking for subtleties, Loop of Croton has been changed to Croton Dam. John felt going over the dam via Croton Dam Road might be less confusing. Fact is that we don't know if Croton Dam Road is actually open. But we shall see. We should congregate on the dam if it is not open so I can lead the group via the previous route around the dam as Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt. Otherwise, we can pass over the dam as per this current cue sheet...

Get on the train early as I have not heard from Metro North with a confirmation of this ride, although I had notified them a month ago. With luck, we will all be accommodated by the conductors. This train gets into North White Plains at 8:25 AM.
that's early.
...and you're not schlepping from Brooklyn.
...last month when we needed to get the ride in for a deadline. It always sounds good, up until the night before the ride.
82.66 miles, 4:43:17, 17.5 mph average, 38.0 mph max, 4537' vertical gain.
We didn't follow the same route at times. And Ron was in the lead group.
I take issue with the Garmin's report of wind direction. The wind over the Croton Reservoir were clearly blowing out or the east to northeast.
Our average speeds are similar. But the Garmin says you averaged 18.2 with a flat. How can that be? You didn't even have a flat...
Ron's motionbased route says +7,961ft of vt. elevation but Hank's says 4537ft. Which one is correct ?
"Somewhere between both and neither. Of interest, a few miles from the end of the ride I asked Ron what his Garmin was reading for altitude on the Hudson River Bike Path by the cruise ship berths. We both were a few feet within each other's value, less than 10' above sea level.
John postulated that the Garmin might be giving a higher sampling rate than the VDO+ and Polar S710. If this is so, what is the ""real"" value? Is it a total of every inch up and down, or sampling which only records changes in feet at intervals every few seconds? Correct is how you define the parameters of the data."
I noticed the Garmin was sampling every 5.5s (on avg) today.
Anyway, it's not the data that's important it's the ride and the camaraderie.
Thank you John and Hank for another great ride.
Could you ride over the top of the dam? Was the road open?
