Nice to see a mention of my friend Steve Klein, who recently came back from hip surgery:

""Few of us were trying to decide which ride we'll do this morning as the split neared. We didn't want Otto to ride alone but Otto must've sensed this because he rolled to the front at the split and very explicitly waved us to go 'regular'. We all followed his order but later I learned 'Retro' Steve had escorted Otto anyway. He's been out of the action for a while and I was glad to see him again. No one pulls off the whole leather hair-net, moth-ball-preserved wool tights and Brooks saddle look like he does. Heck, even his pedaling action looks retro. And he's a super nice guy on top of all that."""

The Gimbel history link does not appear Mac friendly.

Anyone else find this so?

It's more friendly w/Mac Firefox or OmniWeb, but not so friendly w/Safari.

Homage to a defunct department store?

What a bunch of retrogrouches.

(Insert smirk emoticon here.)

When is the B.Altman's ride?

Sorry, that name is taken already

That's the other name for the A-23 Spring Training Series. (Tongue planted firmly in cheek)

Gimbel's Ride

"I enjoyed the blog description of Gimbel's. I know the route pretty well having done it many times this past season. But I don't know all the ""in"" references for the little climbs along the way (Double whammy, Poggio). I haven't been involved in any of the attacks but I have gone with several surges that moved me close up to the front. It is very exciting to being doing 30+ in a pack on a relatively flat road. My goal for this year is to complete the long route without getting dropped or taking a shortcut. The long route is much hillier as it goes north on 120 to 117 to 172 and back down on very bumpy 22 where it rejoins on 433."

Do they run red lights on the Gimbel's ride?

There aren't many traffic lights on the route...

"...but the ride doesn't stop at intersections. Sometimes it can be dangerous: http://www.velogogo.com/GimbelsRide/GimbelsRideJournal2006December30 (read the fourth paragraph and the comments at the bottom)."

we don't stop at intersection, but it happened that cops stopped the entire ride when they caught us going through a stop sign and gave a lecture and threatened us to take us to the precinct (especially at the intersection 172/22 in Bedford on the long ride).

"""In"" references"

"A nyvelocity.com page explains three of those references -- the ""Suppressor,"" the ""Tibetan Plateau,"" and the ""Poggio."""

Long is the old Ultra Long

"The write-up on NY Velocity describes the old long route, note the right turn off of 117 onto 128. The new long route (formerly the ""ultra long"" route) stays straight on 117 at the 128 intersection and goes right on 172. I think some of the ""In"" references refer to points on the section between the 128 intersection and the point at which the old and new long routes join on 22 near 433. I've done the ride many times and I still don't know a lot of the ""In"" references mentioned in the journals. Further proof I'm just not ""In"" with the in crowd.
