Insofar as I know, a retrogrouch is, and has been for many years in this club, a rider who persists in favoring old componentry and old ways of thinking about bicycles.
...Someone, say, with downtube shifters and toe clipped pedals, or a frame of Columbus steel. Maybe SunTour brakes. And a freewheel, preferably with six speeds.

That's not me. Granted I think all bikes are pretty much the same with their major difference being perception fostered by that most devious of arts, advertising; and where there is an actual product distinction, I think way more often than not it's meaningless to the ride and performance.

That said, one of my bike frames, although made in 1991, was literally under my bed, unbuilt, for its first 11 years, so it's only four years in use; the other is three years in use.

Granted I was among the last to go to combined shift and brake levers e.g. STI and Ergo, but I've been there since 2002. Granted I was among the last to go to clipless pedals, but I've been there since, I think, ca. 1990.

So where's the retrogrouch in all this?

As for my being a grouch, well, that's an entirely different matter.

As, I see on the home page, Evan tied with me, perhaps he and I should have a bi(t)ch-off.

NOTE: The above parentheses is to get around the site's auto-censor for profanity.

Richard, I don't think of you or Evan as retro-grouches

As for me, on the other hand, on every club ride I've led or ridden this year:

1) I only used toe clips and straps, never clipless pedals
2) I never used STI/Ergo shifting, and almost always rode a 1972 fixed-gear bike
3) I always wore wool jerseys, even on two 95°F days.

In short, I did nothing that should cause me to lose my title, which I believe I held for two years.

Maybe for Sunday's Hogwich I should dig out my Look pedals. Maybe even a geared bike. But my jersey will be wool, I promise.

Justice demands this....

"The next club meeting is being rescheduled as a sewing bee and quilt sewing circle, at which I will hand over my ill-deserved ""honor"" to him who fully, wholly, and honorably deserves it: Mr. Silver. This is in keeping with that which drives me to be the grouch—not the retrogrouch—I am: the pursuit of justice.

Meanwhile, I demand a recount. Clearly someone tampered with the voting machines. Clearly there is corruption afoot (and achest) here."

"re: ""last to go"""

""Last to go""??? Heck, I didn't go to STI or clipless pedals until this past summer (2006).

Not because I'm a retrogrouch. Because I'm poor.

:)"

Oops. Bob, you caught a typo. I have corrected it: 2002

...So I'm not leaving Bob hanging out, what he responded to, above, is my having mis-typed 2002 as 1992. ...Further evidence of the advance of my dotage.

"Grouch - smouch.!!! what's all the fuss about ... SO WHAT ,, whe don't have the latest ergo shifters and fancy carbon frame ( and carbon seat post, yikes !! ) and your point is ...??? What's the big deal if we are still riding a downtube shifter and Shimano 600 EX components ?? It don't matter , Does It ??.... we push on the pedals and the bike moves forward .bada bing ...very simple ..hahah ..I commute on a 35 year old , 35lbs plus ,3speed internal hub ( ladies version) Railegh sport that I salvaged from the trash,-- Hey A free bike..a big deal for those of us w/ kids in collage.. Why, just the rear wheel alone wheighs more that most ""fancy"" new bikes .After 3.5K miles on the darn thing this year mostly commuting, -- just like a ""Timex "" - it has taken a licking and kept on tickin'.. Don't sweat the small stuff.. Just get on your bike , any bike ,and enjoy yourself ...that's what it's all about ..right ?? ,,,Now I stll have a bunch of whool jersey's, shorts, ol' skool Campi cycling cap w/ ear warmers..( pre- helmet days !! ) that still serves me well ,especially in the winter...AND oh ,yes a pair of Detto - Pietro w/real wooden soles still in the box ,waiting for when I rejuvanate my 1969 Peugeut 10 sp ""racer"" , to wear. Now does that make me a ""retro- grouch"" ?? and if it does ,so what ?? I'm just makind due w/ what I have.. !!!! have fun riding YOUR bicycle..
