"I first put this under Richard Rosenthal's NYT thread, but I think it deserves its own. The d3o/spyder links are particularly intriguing.

"Ok, I got a little excited about this, and called up Andre Koller, the US distributor for Ribcap hats. He doesn't have a web store up yet, but he does have inventory, and he does take PayPal. Prices are $99 for the less-ornate models (I ordered a Percy and a Janice), a bit more for the Hendrix and so on. UPS Ground shipping from California is $12.50 for the 1st hat, $2.50 for each additional. Order this week to ensure delivery by 12/25. Best, says Andre, is to check out the product line on ribcap.ch, and email him what you want. He'll send you a PayPal receipt, you'll pay it, and off you'll go.

cautions that their hats are not substitutes for conventional crash helmets, and carry no SNELL or ANSI certification. But... gee whiz.

Does it stop bullets? Might be good at trigger-happy traffic stops.
