"I have chain rub on my large x small combination. I can't get rid of it without aggravating a more serious problem-- namely, my chain falling off to the outside when I shift from the small to large chainring.

My bike shop proposes to bend my front derailleur cage. But that reminds me of the frontal lobotomy performed on Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Should I submit to it?-- the bending of my derailleur cage, I mean. I ride a Roubaix Expert with FSA 50 x 36T compact cranks, with a 12 x 27T cogset, and Ultegra components."

Compact FD

I had FD chain rub with the Shimano 50/34 compact double using a Shimano Ultegra FD. I changed to the FSA compact FD. It shifts better and I don't have any chain rub. I haven't had any problems with the chain coming off while shifting when using the FSA compact FD.
