Did some laps today and on the descent at the north end of the loop, just before Lasker Rink, a few kids were pelting cars with those large green fruits (don't know the name, but they're about the size of a billiard ball). Fortunately, a cab and a minivan were between me and the kids, and took the hits (the one time I appreciated having cars in the park!). I stopped and pulled out my cellphone, but the kids bolted.

Keep an eye out - the kids may get weary of hitting targets as large as cars and may opt for the more challenging-to-hit cyclist. The real risk is not the bruise those fruits will leave, but that it might cause you to crash, potentially in front of a car (ok, I'm back to hating the fact that cars are allowed in the park).

"For an hour or two today it looked like this before it was changed:

""Avocado (Persea americana) is a tree and the fruit of that tree, classified in the flowering plant family Lauraceae. It is native to Central America and Mexico. The tree grows to 20 m (65 ft), with alternately arranged, evergreen leaves, 12-25 cm long. The flowers are inconspicuous, greenish-yellow, 5-10 mm wide. The pear-shaped fruit is botanically a berry or drupe, from 7 to 20 cm long, and weighs between 100 to 1000 g. It has a large central seed, 3 to 5 cm in diameter. May also be used by bandit children to pelt cars and cyclists on the North loop of Central Park in New York city. Beware riders, they hurt like crazy."""

It's gone now, but it was hilarious while it lasted. Though I suppose it really applies to the osage orange, which is what all the cool kids are hurling at cars these days.

Hedge Apple vs. Breadfruit

The tree I'm thinking about should be ID as a Hedge Apple tree not a Breadfriut tree since the Breadfriut tree is in more tropical regions!

Ginkgo Bilboa

"Its the ""fruit"" from female Ginkgo Bilboa Tree or the Stinko"" tree as its sometimes called since the ""fruit"" smells so bad. The smelly ""fruit"" dropping to the ground is an annual event this time of year.
