on saturday, 8-19-06 i locked my bianchi, volpe [burgundy] to the fence in front of the us customs house at 1 bowling green, never to be seen again. i guess no bike is safe, no lock strong enough, even if locked to an iron fence.

That sucks!

So sorry that happened to you, Hal!

Would you believe that is where the Southern District of New York Bankruptcy Court is also housed? One would think that at least one of the lawyers associated with the Northwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, Enron or Delphi bankruptcies would have seen something!

Hal, sorry for your loss.

my condolences

"I feel your pain, man....
and how many times have I heard from the club riders ""you never ever ever lock your bike in the city,"" and I know what they mean -- my two rotten Peugeots were stolen from under the most expensive chains and locks."

bike stolen

kim, mike p. not only did I know the bankruptcy court was there, I was locked to their fence.
I did ck security upstairs, at the Indian mus, and was informed they are only inside, upstairs security. Downstairs to the right is inside federal security office. However, to the left, at the bankruptcy is inside u.s. marshal’s.
But none of them cover outside, that’s the guy in the brown shirt, who was nowhere to be found.
Won’t even get into the issue of getting a police report done nor the process of getting someone to talk with at the us marshal’s office. Our government at work. Do you all feel better protected now? Me I just walk around in a state of confusion. So, having had several “luxury” cars stolen and my last totaled, I’ll just rake it up to experience and move on unless of course I catch the person. Then I’ll need some of you on the jury. Thanks to all for your thoughts.

i had my gary fisher hkii bike stolen in '99...

"...parked in front of my office building. the full time security guard said a van pulled up and two guys jumped out...within seconds the bike was in the van and they took off. i had a cryptonite lock on the front wheel and frame, and i had a heavy square linked chain on the back wheel and frame. they busted through both using cutters. the guard couldn't believe it.

i wonder if ""mike the bike"" still sells beater bikes at the 6av (23st?) flea market?

it's been years...

...and i moved to queens in early '05 so not sure if the lot is still there. if it moved, mike moved with the flea market. don't expect much from him but the bikes run fine (they look like crap...which is kind'a what you want ).

flea market bikes

The flea market that used to be at 24-25th Street and 6th Avenue moved to Hell's Kitchen -- approximately around 39th Street and 9th Avenue -- drastically shrinking. But there is a guy who sells crappy bikes under $100 sitting on a parking lot at 6th Ave and probably 18-19 Street (at least as of last summer).

bike stolen-a real [good] ny story

A number of you may remember my posting on 8-20-06 regarding my bike being stolen. I received several return messages of “sympathy” for which I want to say thanks. The support made me feel a lot better, like I wasn’t alone on this.
I want to follow that with a really big thanks for several members who noticed a posting on craig’s list that someone found a bianchi, volpe and put me in contact with that individual. i called, described the bike to him and he said, “it’s yours”. He found it in front of his restaurant. I’ve since some to learn that he has had 2 bikes stolen and no one has returned them. So, even though he was left out in the cold, it especially speaks to the honesty and integrity of this individual, a real new yorker. My bike was repatriated with relatively little damage. his name is david tompkins and his restaurant is dallas jones bbq [for those rib lovers] at 78 houston corner of 6th &bedford]. So if you’re in the neighborhood stop in and say hello. Tell him you’re with nycc & hal spoke highly of him. After all, judging by some of the messages we see out there, we can’t have too many friends. Again, thanks to all and thank you david.

new lock?

rob, thanks for your help. well i’ve decided on a new tact, since i’m a pacifist and, obviously, locks don’t work. I’m just going to leave the bike sitting there. My shotgun will then be placed on a rooftop across the street to baby sit. honed in with infrared, triggered for movement and at the ready to inform the scumbag that it was not one of their best ideas as they begin to ride off into the sunset, piecemeal. Plan be would just be: if I can’t see it I don’t leave it.
