Also check the message board for impromptu rides during the week.

I also work weekends so sometimes post on the board about some ride I plan on doing (usually thursdays and fridays).

Generally no one joins me because they can't keep up so this year I haven't posted too many requests.

How fast are you?

Hey Greg, how far down your back can you pat yourself?

Weekday Rides

Well, yeah. On the Home Page, right on the right hand side, there are 3 weekday rides this week alone. We cannot gaurantee that there will be a ride every day of the week, and in your particular level of riding, but the club offers lots of rides on most days of the week.

Steve,
Welcome. I started road riding about a month ago and have done some weekday NYCC rides. Check the ride listings on the site (you'll need to join NYCC to do this, but it's well worth the price of admission). Also check the message board because sometimes we'll propose rides on short notice. There's a regular B16 ride out on River Road on Wednesdays (not sure if that's too fast or slow for you - use the self-test of laps around Central Park).

weekday rides

Hey Joe
thanks! i think i can do a B16 ride. i see that your list of rides is only open to members so i'll be sending in my membership fee. I just hope that this is not an intimidating kind of club, which is what i hear from alot of rider who decide to stay away from joining bike clubs

it's not

If the riders you know stay away from joining clubs, how would they know if they're intimidating? I think you'll find the NYCC lots of fun and good company on rides. Of course, there are all kinds of riders and all types of rides, including ones to challenge you when, and if, you want to be challenged. Welcome to the club!

No, it's not intimidating. I switched over from mtb, and had heard the same thing about road biking clubs. NYCC isn't as laid back as 5BBC, but I wouldn't want them to be. You can try a 5BBC ride first, but I found them to be too slow - there are some strong riders there, but the relaxed nature of the club draws some very slow riders. You'll never get dropped at a 5BBC ride, but you may spend a lot of time waiting.

NYCC riders are looking to get in a good workout (so you may get dropped if you join a ride that's too fast for you), so not a lot of time spent on rest stops, waiting for others, etc. The key is joining rides that are going at the right pace for you - which is why I suggest doing the Central Park self-test. And make sure your bike is in good working condition.

Weekday Cyclists

"Also check out the Weekday Cyclists, which is spearheaded by an NYCC member: http://members.aol.com/trudyth/. They have Thursday rides for another month or so, generally at the equivalent of an NYCC C pace. It's not a club, just a loose but organized group of people who have time to ride during the week. Joining the e-mail list is free, as are the rides.

In general road cyclists are an anal, sociably unapproachable group. However the majority of this club are really nice people once you get to know them and see them on a couple of rides. As for the others you'll know who to avoid quickly.

The main thing is to get out and ride and enjoy yourself.

SIG

"Steve, definitely do one of the SIGs in the spring. The C-SIG, which I did, is a wonderful introduction to road biking. You can read about them on the ""rides"" page.

Welcome to the club."

Steve: I ride with NYCC & Weekday Cyclists. You said Wed. & Thurs. were best for you. If you're ever available on Tues., Weekday Cyclists does laps in Central Park starting at 10 from the Boathouse. I'm usually there & will be happy to ride with you & discuss the choices.
