Am thinking of getting a Serotta. Any input on Serotta's would be appreciated.

Be sure to take a look at Moots first!!! The most wonderful Titanium bikes on earth.... They are also a bit less expensive that Serotta and offer a custom build option. You will not be disappointed!

Which model? Steel? Ti? Combo?

Serotta

I am insanely pleased with my new Serotta--contemplated a custom bike for four years, before discovering Signature Cycles (on West End Avenue)this Spring--I have no hestitation recommending either the frame or the retail outlet. I own the Ottrot, which seems to be best for my build and bike stance.

"If you are not ordering a bike, the cost of a fitting is about $375. Otherwise, ""free"".

My bike all-in was about 8K, but there were many cheaper alternatives (and obviously many more expensive ones as well).

At the risk of starting an endless series of responses, and as a non-bike techie, I think you need to count on spending at least $4500 for a custom bike-- frame materials, wheels and components are what drive it up from there."

Its possible to spend less on a custom bike.
I did and friends of mine did.
It depends on many factors as you say such as
the frame builder as well as the materials and components but
it is possible to get a custom bike that fits really well and rides beautifully for 4K or under
(not alot under but still...).

based on other posts on this board, i think the $375 is reduced some (to around $175), but not free...

Um, well, for those of us that don't work at an investment bank (or some flavor of finance, heh), there is always the CUSTOM Mercian option. I believe the fitting and measurements cost nothing from Bicycle Habitat.

Approx. $1,100 for a lugged, custom frame. Don't freak, it weighs just a few ounces more than the average fancy tig-welded Ti frameset. Throw in +$1,800 for a complete Chorus gruppo from GVH (this includes hand-built wheels) or $1,350 for complete Centaur (good enuf for me) and you're doing it for 2.5-3k all in.

My 2¢.

my winter 2004-2005 project...$3050

1. used litespeed classic 1998 frame...$600
2. dura ace group (minus hubs)...$1300
3. wheels...$350
4. handlebars, stem, seat, seatpost, pedals, etc...$800

total $3050

nothing beats a custom built bike. :)
