My friend is looking for an outfitter (and destinations) that could accommodate her family, 2 children (9 &11) and possibly a few other family members. She is interested in splurging on a trip that could provide very comfortable camping accommodations and very good food.... beautiful routes, comfort and adaptability to biking abilities being most important. The rides could possibly be mountain bike as well.

FYI... they are not ""bikers"" but they are looking for a fun active vacation.

If your going to splurge with the family:

"Here are the top 2 companies that can give you the 5 diamond cycling vacation experience:

Trek Travel
Backroads

These 2 companies are like the Four Seasons, the Ritz Carlton, and the Mandarin Oriental Hotels of Cycling Vacations. The itinerary & the routes are mind-blowing. Accomodations are first class and the guides exceed all guests expectation.

Personally I prefer Trek Travel than Backroads. But it's all about having fun and having the best service from these 2 cycling companies w/ your family.

Backroads Multi-sport family trips

2 years ago we did a Backroads Multisport family camping trip to the Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion with my then 6 1/2 year old. It was primarily cycling and hiking. I rode with Marc on a trail-a-bike, while the older kids rode on their own. The group had a wide range of ages (3 years old to 15 years old). Cycling distances were short (good for the kids), and each day had additional activities. Some days the leaders took the kids on organized trips so the adults could do their own thing. That was my opportunity to do additional riding. The camping was easy since the staff sets up all the tents, all you need to do is find your luggage. The food was surprisingly well-prepared. Fresh veggies, pasta, salmon, desserts, beer and wine, etc. I highly recommend these trips for families who want an active and well organized vacation.

another option

Last year I did a trip with Bicycle Adventures. It was incredibly well organized, well run, well led, well planned, wanting for nothing. I know they also have multi-sport trips and family oriented trips. AAA hotel options and camping options. Worth looking into.
