I am looking for a spring summer cycling vacation away from New York. I have heard of Cycle America--but it looks like they ride longer/day than I am comfortable with. I would prefer to ride about 50 miles/day. Any suggestions? Thanks

Definitely check out Backroads. My soon to be ex went on a 10 day trip that started in Utah and ended up in Arizona. The group biked 50+ miles per day, hiked, and stayed in hotels along the way. The photos were breath-taking and I wished I had been invited on this trip! The outfit has been given the highest reviews for their itineraries for all levels and service.

need more info before I can make suggestions

I am going on my 14th Backroads trip next year so obviously I think all of their tours have been great--they definitely are not cheap--What is your budget, do you want resort type destination or culture, hills, what kind of people (age, etc) do you want as fellow travelers?
intl or domestic etc etc???

I am writing you as someone with a VERY limited budget. i.e. I did not have moulah for an expensive trip like backroads which will run you an easy grand. I did a 4 day ride around new england on my own. Just get a map, a set of paneers which will hold a weeks worth of clothes no problem, adn one more bag with bike tools just in case. I stayed at cheap motels, and had a great time.

Motels

I rode NY-Cape Cod-Boston and SF-LA, stayed in the campgrounds and hostels. How much are the motels?

you can generally find something for 30-40 bucks anight no problem. you are too tired to care what the place looks like anyway.

touring ideas

"The Blue Ridge Mountains are very beautiful. You can drive there or fly. I spent two weeks in Boone NC last May and it was spectacular. Everybody should cycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway at some time in their lives! and there is much else to enjoy. There is a lot of climbing but usually long and steady and not overly steep.

For self-supported touring i recommend this for carrying your gear: http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Post-Haste-Bicycle-Quickbag/dp/B000ACAMFQ. (I paid twice this price and would have paid double.) It contains an amazing amount of stuff, and got me all over Europe without any troubles at all.

Have fun!"

"If at some future date you're feeling a bit more flush, I would highly recommend an organization I used last year to take 7-day group ride from Venice to Florence (Italy). It's called ""Experience Plus."" Based in Colorado. It's an established family-owned organization. He's American; She's Italian. They run bike trips to various countries in Europe and they use their own trained guides. The trips are rated for different levels and abilities. The accommodations are also very nice, with a more local feel than your basic hotel chain. Also, they have excellent bikes and excellent fitters. I faxed the fitter in Italy my exact bike measurements from stem to stern(thanks to Paul Levine's meticulous diagram), and when I arrived my perfect bike was waiting for me. It's worth saving up for!"
