It depends on your destination...

Do you mean the State Park? Or the town? Or Harry Mann?

And are you talking about a direct line from anywhere on 9W or via 9W from NYC?

Have you perused the Ride Library yet?

Harry Man

Hank,
Yes, I'm coming up Route 9W from NYC, planning a one-night layover in or around Harriman on my way to points west from there. HaHaHarryMan.
Thanks,
Marcia

details

But is it Harriman State Park or Harriman, NY?

For the former, use any Bear Mtn ride in the Ride Library. It will take you into Harriman State Park

For the latter, take 9W to Route 106 in Stony Point. Go west (left) on 106 up to Kanawauke Circle then take 7 Lakes Drive north, the first exit on the circle. Go through the next circle, Tiorati Circle to the next circle. There, at the unmarked Queensbury Circle (you can identify it as Route 6 is on this circle) take the 3rd exit on the circle, Route 6 west. When you get to the bottom of the hill (you will have no doubt you have hit the bottom) take a left on Route 32/17 into Harriman.

However, 9W is nasty for cycling in the Haverstraw region. Although not for everyone, taking a left onto South Mountain Road and a right, ascending Little Tor then a right onto 202 and a left at the first light onto Central Highway and a left at its end onto Route 106 is safer for a cyclist. If the 10% 0.8 mile stretch of Little Tor is not your cup of tea, stay on 9W to the left 1.5 miles past South Mountain Road and take 202 west, then a right in 1.3 miles onto Central Highway. Once again, take a left at the end of Central Highway onto Route 106 and follow the above instructions.

If you plan on doing this, get a map of Rockland County and one of Orange County and review the above till you are comfortable with the directions.

Hank, I truly appreciate your detailed directions...Thanks. By any chance, have you ever biked Route 6 across PA??

Great directions. Thanks. I've done that ride but not the Little Tor part. Doesn't sound so little! I ended up getting off 9w and riding through some town by the river.

One thing I've never come up with is a good loop around Harriman once I'm up there. Is there a nice circuit that's anywhere from 10-40 miles? I'd drive or take the train up there to do that.

Here is what you do....

Go to the Ride Library and download John Zenkus's Hudson Highland Route under the UPSTATE popup menu.

You get on this ride at either the Circle on Route 6 at mile 17.1 which is off the causeway north of Peekskill if you take Metro North to Peekskill. You have to ride the shoulder of 9 to the left traffic light at the bottom of the hill, taking 6 where it diverges from 9. Or you can get to the Bear Mtn Bridge at mile 20.6 by taking the Metro North to Garrison and going south on 9D. This will save you climbing 6 to the Bear Mtn Bridge up Anthony's Nose.

Follow the cue sheet to mile 55 where you take the second right on the circle, 7 Lakes Drive north, following the signs to Bear Mtn. The road will go on then quickly off the Pallisades Parkway so be careful. Stay on 7 Lakes Drive as it climbs to the base of Perkins which you can do, then down to the next and last traffic circle beneath the hairpin turn. Take the second exit which will drop you onto 9W north and back to the Bear Mtn Traffic Circle and the Bear Mtn Bridge to get to Metro North.

Be prepared for hills. This ride is very hilly but rewarding.

another route

Instead of going clear up to Stony Point to catch 106, you could take CR 98 from West Haverstraw. It's shorter, quieter, and intersects with 106 at the entrance to the park.

The best map of Harriman is sold by NJ - NY trails conference. It has all the roads clearly marked, and all the hiking trails too. It is also printed on tyvek paper. I think my Hagstrom map of Orange or Putnam had some obsolete road names and numbers that made it confusing to get from 9W to Harriman SP.

Agreed, 98 is more direct but Gate Hill is steeper via it rather than 106.
