First, did you know there is a zoo at Bear Mtn? It is just south of the toll plaza for the bridge, also accessed via a tunnel under 9w that goes from the trail along Hessian Lake.
What is the significance of the Zoo at Bear Mtn and the Appalachian Trail other than the fact that trail users do not have to pay to go to the zoo as the zoo path is the AT?
Can you answer this?

It's the lowest elevation on the trail
But the admission is $1, not free. 50 cents for kids.

Bear Mountain Zoo & AT
The very first section of the AT was from the Bear Mountan Zoo to the Delaware Mountain Gap. . . .

Zoo
I have visited that zoo a couple of years ago and many of the animals were rescues.. either injured, disabled or were unable to live in the wild for some reason. Nice idea.

I can't verify that. Sorry.
Originally, the AT was not going to cross the Bear Mtn Bridge as its concept predated the bridge. It was going to take the Newburgh to Beacon ferry.
