"I am considering forming an e-mail network of NYCC riders who might be interested in an occasional mtn bike ride.
The rides would be both impromptu (e.g., ‘anyone want to head up to Blue Mtn on Sunday?’) and official. I’m thinking of listing a recurring mtn bike ride on the last Sunday of each month as an official NYCC ride.
We would most often visit train-accessible parks in the tri-state area, such as Blue Mtn, Graham Hills, Mianus, Huber/Hartshorne, Stillwell Woods, Bethpage, etc. We could also take advantage of any who have cars, to carpool to places like Ringwood, Ninham, or Stewart.
Most rides would be of an ""intermediate"" skill level, though we could have beginner options as well if enough were interested and experts would be welcome to hone their skills. Good physical fitness, ability to manuever hilly off-road singletrack trails, and a suspension bike with knobby tires would be the minimal requirements.
I realize NYCC is a road club, and that there are mtn bike clubs like WMBA and NYCMTB, but our group would consist of road riders first, but who want a change of scenery and experience every now and then.
In this posting I’m simply getting a sense of the level of interest. Respond to this thread or email me directly if you are interested, and we’ll see where this goes.
By the way, the colder days of fall and winter can be great times to mtn bike!

mtn bike network?
Hi Carl
There are several of us who ride mountain bikes in the club. In fact, next Sunday we're going to Hartshorne. I have a car, and generally take up to 4 people with bikes. Would you like to join us? It will be a low key ride. Sharon Shachar is recovering from a broken pelvis and I haven't ridden my mountain bike in several months. My wife is a beginner. But most of us are experienced mountain bikers once we're in shape.
BTW, your organizing a network is a great idea.
Herb,
Would love to join next Sunday, but am leaving for a business trip. Actually I love doing Huber/Hartshorne together, riding there from the Middletown NJ train station, and coming back via the Seastrak ferry (often with a stop at Sandy Hook). ...
-Carl
I like the idea. I road ride primarily. I do not follow the MTN bike sites at all, yet go MTN biking every now and then.
"A few years ago, I spent a few enjoyable wintry days in Hartshorne/Huber so please include me on any list you may create. While a (perhaps unreasonable) paranoia about ticks and Lyme disease keeps me out of the woods in summer, I'd love to do a few rides this winter. I expect I'd fall into the ""intermediate"" category also.

I would love to give it a try. I'm slow and steady. Please include me on the list.

Carl, I am interested, as I believe you already know.
Chris
Carl,
I also love to MTB and would love to be added to any distribution list you create. I have not had the chance to ride off road in the NYC area as I usually head up to the Adirondacks, but would love to ride my MTB more often. I have a car and can always take one additional person as that is all the room I have a available on my roof rack.

Hey!
I'd love to join. I pace around B17-18, and would love to join other mountain bikers. I go out to Stillwell and the Greenbelt trail pretty often, but would love to check out other sites. I have a roof rack that can hold 2 bikes so I can travel.
Please keep me posted,
Dan
If you get this list going, please add me! I've been looking for people to go mountain biking with since I moved to the city a year ago. I don't have a car yet but may be getting one early next year.
-Stacey
Please include me on the list too. I dig impromtu mountain bike rides. I'm reasonably fast off road.
I'm interested in whatever local rides anyone wants to put together. I haven't been MTB'g in the NY area and would like to find trails and riding partners.

Count me in!
As the weather starts to get colder, I will, as usual, graduately spend more days going off-road than road. By December, it'll be ONLY off-road rides.
Some years back, there were a few of us NYCC roadies who like to mountain bike occasionally. We had tons of fun. As fit roadies, we typically didn't do the hard-core stunt stuff but cruise along the intermediate trails at a pretty good clip (and re-group occasionally). It's really a continuation of the roadie season into the woods when the wind chill got too unpleasent.
I remember there were even mountain bike rides listed in the bulletin almost every month back then! Too bad it didn't continue. Hope this one have more life.
It's a great idea. Add me to the list.
"I plan to submit an ""official"" mtn bike ride for the last Sunday of each month. For Sept 24 I will list Huber/Hartshorne, since I want to do that while the weather is still warm, with the beach nearby. Then we can decide as a group what the Oct. ride might be.
Later this week, I'll send everyone the emails of all who have expressed interest in mtn biking, so that anyone can post a message for an ""impromptu"" ride.
I'm pleased with the interest that this thread has generated! (a few others have emailed me directly)..
"
Carl, a rider at my wifes job was at Hartshorne this weekend. Trees down on most trails. To large to hop. Mostly portaging the bikes. Who would clear this up? Does Hartshorne have a Park patrol?
It's probably the same issue all over the region.
Not sure who does trail clearing at the various parks. Worth looking into.

not like that - pretty awesome!
Would like to join as well. Please add my name to you list.

Sharon, Stacey, Liane and I went out to Hartshorne on Sunday. Took us an extra hour to find it :-( but we had a great day. The trails are free of fallen trees and were eminetely rideable.
would love to join.
please keep me posted.
