I have a fracture of the proximal humerus after a fall yesterday. Can anyone recommend a good shoulder surgeon in Manhattan?

I did a search of the message boards and found a strong recommendation for Dr Frank Cordasco of HSS, but I'm hoping to get at least one other name as many folks are out of town the week before Labor Day.

thx

shoulder surgeon?

Dr. Michael Rettig (212-889-8600, 263-4263) is a hand surgeon who hopefully has saved the functionality of my thumb by doing surgery on its ligament, which needed to be done on an emergency basis due to (1) a bike crash on 7-2-06 caused by the bike shop which sold me and fitted me for my defective, custom-made bike and then (2) malpractice by 4 doctors who didn't perform a simple test on the thumb that a child could have done. When referred to him, I was told that he also does shoulders, and he did examine mine, also injured in the bike crash. Dr. Rettig has privileges at N.Y.U. Medical Center, where my thumb surgery was done. Good luck with your surgery!

why blame the bike?

"why is your bike ""defective""..........
a custom bike? How so?"

The list goes on . . .

Russell Warren

HSS - I believe he is the most senior guy there in this field. Rather sought after. Extremely experienced (perhaps at the expense of newer methods?). In his late 50s? The physician for the New York Giants.

Fixed my broken collar bone that required plating 2yrs ago. Plate still in. Everything works fine.

I have since gone to him for another shoulder injury - torn labrum and rotator cuff. I liked his conservative, wait and see approach.

212-606-1075

Good luck!

Cordasco

One thing I have to say about Cordasco is that I went to see him after banging up my shoulder snowboarding. He said it required surgery - plain and simple.

I got a second opinion who thought that jumping to surgery was premature and that I should try physical therapy first.

8-10 wks later - good as new, no surgery

What kind of fracture?

"I am an orthopedic surgeon and do fracture work. Depending on the kind of fracture you have, it might be a straightforward operation or a much more involved one. Do you have a ""two part"" or a ""three part"" or a ""four part"" fracture? Many simpler fractures can be treated nonoperatively if the bone ends are close together.

Struan Coleman is excellent (as below) and I would recommend him without hesitation.
Hope you are OK.

Cordasco

I would agree: avoid Cordasco who was recommended to me on this bulletin board last year. He also wanted to rush me right to surgery with a shoulder separation (one of three ligament busted). For various reasons I delayed then declined. Except for a bump on my shoulder my non-surgical recovery has been fine.

I was happy with Ramesh Gidumal of NYC and HSS.

I had a separated shoulder after getting hit by a car.

At HSS, Russell Warren is definitely the one. I would avoid Cordasco, who talked me into an unnecessary surgery.

Struan Coleman HSS

Dr. Struan Coleman helped me through my broken left collar bone and later repaired my right rotator cuff. He's a really nice guy, spells out all the options and is also doctor for The Mets (I think). If I needed my other shoulder repaired I'd head straight for him.

Struan

I know Struan personally and he is excellent. I would send a relative to him in a heartbeat. Scott Rodeo is also excellent but it might be tough to see him since he also runs a lab.

I hope you are OK.

thank you to all for your input--it is very helpful. i was able to get an appointment w Rodeo this afternoon (Tuesday) and will proceed from there.

according to the radiologist & ER doc, it is only a two-part fracture but is at the top of the head of the bone. i have low bone density which may account for an odd break.

it will be interesting to see what an orthopedist says.

fracture

If it is a greater tuberosity fracture and it is displaced, he may want to fix it so it does not impinge or limit motion in the future. If it is a surgical neck fracture and not displaced then it might be treated nonoperatively. If it is an anatomic neck fracture and angulated or displaced, he might want to fix it.

Good luck!
