looks like they're doing some road work. eta for reopening old mountain road (approach from 9w) is late september.

old mountain road closed
haven't been up there in the past couple weeks...supposed to be closed still.
Climbed it the last couple weeks - just carry your bike over the barricade and enjoy the ride. No real obstacles except the 35% grade.
...it takes a good running start to make it up old mountain road (in a 39x23)...the barricade is about 50 feet into the climb. how do you get started again after the barracade? do you have a triple? :)
Don, when are you picking up your Oakleys? I have had several offers for them. I could use the cash. :-)

...it's probably the steepest in this area (aside from speer, etc., which are too short and lead to a dead end in piermont). it's steep enough for samuel jackson to try it and yell ""i'm tired of this motherf***1*@ hill on this motherf***1*@ bike"".

I don't think it's really 35%, just feels that way the first couple of times :o
To get started past the barricades try going across the road in your lowest gear rather than up, and clip in real fast.

The Mortirolo, said to be the toughest climb in the three Grand Tours, tops out at 19%. Pantani holds the record on it. The Pros use a triple on it.
The Angliru in the Vuelta is said to be the most difficult in that race and its topographic profile looks more daunting that the Mortirolo.
Wales has roads at 25%. They were built for cattle.
Old Mtn/S Highland Av from 9W to let up... 0.35 miles, 300' gain... hold onto your teeth... 16.2%... King of Rockland County!
"this is the steep one we're talking about...after you climb ash, head north on 9w. you'll hit the climb just before the fork that leads into nyack (before the bridge)..."
FYI - I've carefully measured Old Mountain Road and it's 32% at it steepest point.
"Jack, I think you have to check your math. These reflect difficulty in going down grades on skis. If you were to look at the 22% grade at the end of Mt Washington you would wonder if it was possible to go up it. 34% is that garde plus another 12%, the average grade on the climb, which has a reputation that hinges on the 12%, the weather and the length.
Ski Trail Difficulty Ratings in North America
Trail Rating Symbol Level of difficulty Description
Green Circle Easiest The easiest pistes at a mountain. Green Circle trails are generally wide and groomed, typically with slope angles ranging from 6° to 25°. These trails are typically the most popular trails among newer skiers and snowboarders.
Blue Square Easy Intermediate difficulty, usually more difficult than Green Circle-marked slopes. The slope angle commonly ranges from 25° to 40° and the snow is usually groomed. Blue Square runs comprise the bulk of pistes at most ski areas, and are usually among the most heavily-trafficked.
Black Diamond Difficult Amongst the most difficult at a given mountain. Black Diamond trails are steep (often 40° and up) and may or may not be groomed, though the introduction of winch-cats has made the grooming of steep slopes both possible and more frequent."
I'm not sure where you got the rise and run info, but the road is pretty clearly steeper than 16%. If Ash is 12% OMR is at least 20%, probably more (at times, not on average). Nevertheless Jack you need to check your altimeter. You can't expect us to believe it's 32%. That's just rediculous.
Wales' mountain roads MAY have been designed for cattle, but it appears that only sheep can cope with them. (I believe they are genetically modified to have unequal, or perhaps telescoping, legs).
An even greater challenge than the rise is the slipperiness of the road, thanks to the healthy intestinal workings of said sheep.
