Fixies outlawed?
Fixies outlawed?
its not the fixies themselves that were unlawful, its fixies without brakes. and frankly, running a fixie without a brake anywhere other than a velodrome is just plain stupid.
not having at least a front break is a source of pride for some good fixie riders. sure, you can control your speed well enough with just your legs, but riding brakeless in the city is silly and seems to be more about showing off. hell, i've got both brakes on my fixie just in case. all those guys have to do is put on a $40 tektro brake and be done with it. no one says they have to use it, but sometimes it's damn good to have.
...it's about strength and stamina. i rode a canondale fixie for several years when i was in top shape. i rode to nyack and oyster bay (hills and all). i was able to ride in traffic and stop without any issues. i was also able to a hand-less trackstand at the stoplight so i could fill out my clipboard without having to unclip.
like the judge said, i wouldn't ride without a brake now...i don't have the strength (not to mention i carry more weight
the nycc might want to hold an open test. challenge some of nyc's best fixie riders to go toe to toe with a c-rider...let's see who can manuver/brake faster or better.
my money is on the strong fixie rider.

Ive been on a fixie before so i know how to stop but flying down a hill, how did you do it?
"...and resist the pedals. you'll look silly if you're going fast, but it works. :)
now ask how you slow down and/or stop when you're on five wheel speedskates (also without brakes) going to nyack/oyster bay. :B
