Hi Floyd!

"""lot of time on your hands?""

Yep. Day off. Goin' riding now. See ya.

Hmm. ""Popeye Doyle"" and ""Floyd Landis"" Two Americans in France. One does drugs.

Downhill jump over the peloton at Alpe d'Huez

"The piece on downhillers in roadie tights caught my attention since I am on a mission to bring baggy shorts to roadies - another fashion faux pas?

In that little blurb, I read how some guy - Dave Watson - jumped the peloton on Alpe d'Huez this year.

Here is the video of the jump just behind the rear of the mini-peloton and in front of a support vehicle.

I own a couple pairs of Bellweather baggy shorts -- they're actually pretty comfortable as far as the SCA* goes. But the flapping around against my thighs gets a bit annoying after a short time, and the SOUND of them flapping against my thighs is downright intolerable!

Regardless of whether they're a fashion faux pas, baggies just don't seem conducive to a relaxed, peaceful road ride.

Cycling fashionistas say . . . .

. . . .NO REAR VIEW MIRRORS ON HELMETS, NEILE!

HAH!

Hey Dave. Actually, I keep mine on my glasses.

But seriously, how do people ride without *any* rear view? Checking for cars-back by repeatedly whipping one's head around on a fast handling road bike ... ?

The more you do it the easier it is. It eventually becomes a natural thing to do. Even though I had mirrors on my motorcycle there was nothing like that ""real"" check of looking behind you."

I use to think that till I got the mirror (wasn't born with the damn thing). Pivoting eyeballs is a lot safer than pivoting head.

unless they are in your blind spot(s).

I used to use a mirror, till I got into pacelines and all I could see was other riders, who I knew were there anyway.

Since I don't paceline much anymore, maybe I should get one.

If your bike swerves when you turn your head, more is rotating than your neck. Remember, you steer the bike with your hips.

In my experience, cyclists with rearview mirrors (whether the kind attached to the handlebars or glasses) ride more in the middle of the road.

Disagree. (I use a HindSite 20/20 inside my sunglasses).

I bet Ed Fishkin disagrees too.

I've known Ed for years, and even did a long bike trip with him recently, and he knows my opinion about his mini-mirror. He hopefully doesn't hold it against me.

Turning one's head

Plus, it's good exercise for one's ageing neck.

Mirrors

"On all bicycle style matters, I listen to the arbiter elegantiarum of r.b.m., Fabrizio Mazzoleni* (where is he now?):

And in general, I think his example here can't be bettered:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.bicycles.misc/msg/6b85ae5b4a295bed

""I was out in my retro gear = wool/acrylic La Redoute Motobecane jersey and acrylic 'team Zeus' shorts by Vestisport, retro Santini team Italia cap with an old Cinelli hair net helmet, black Detto Pietro lace up cycling shoes and white socks, crochet leather palmed De Marchi gloves, and big round gold rimed Bolero Sunglasses just like Fausto Coppi wore in the 1949 Giro.

""Nothing personal, but, when I'm out there like that on my Campy Nuovo Record equipped steel Columbus SL bike I try to pretend all you spandex wearing people riding those new friction shifting [n.b.: should be ""index shifting""], plastic / aluminium bikes aren't really there.

""And everyone on your ride seemed to have a block of Styrofoam strapped to their heads!""
