20 laps in CP from 7 pm on

Can I do it at 15mph? Do you think I will be done by morning?

Easily. At that speed (without stops) you should be done around 3am.

Anyone remember the Pepsi Challenge?

"There used to be an annual 24-hour race in Central Park called the Pepsi Challenge. Here's an article about John Howard (who later set a 24-hour paced record of 539 miles in Clearwater, FL in 1987) winning in 1982."

was this a non-stop 24-hour ride?

I just did my math, and that's an average speed of 19.8 mph (for his 475 miles around Central Park). That's insane...

Yes, non-stop

"Of course, even if you stop for any reason, the clock keeps ticking.

See the August 1982 bulletin to see where NYCC and CRCA riders placed that year."

You'll notice in the results that Christy Guzzetta did 250 miles in that 24 hour marathon. Actually, I did 400 miles, they just counted wrong.

paced

He was paced, so there is some drafting advantage built in there.
But he broke the non-paced record of Lee Phoenix of 470 miles? Wow. That is insane.

Mordecai,

That says the event ENDED in Central Park. Are you sure the whole damn thing took place in the Park? Never mind, a few more Google searches, and I'm convinced. Insane!

Yes, it was all in the Park

And John Howard bettered his distance in 1983, with 514 miles.

Yes, the entire event was run IN the park. As for sleep...

"The parks department permitted people to pitch tents for that evening and people did, sleeping for a few hours, then re-mounting their bikes.

It was only later that I learned, when someone yelled at me, ""Get the hell outta the way,"" to which I responded, ""Go the hell around me!"" he was part of Howard's team/windbreak...not that I knew who Howard was then, either."

HFCS Pepsi Challenge

"I remember running the Pepsi Challenge 10K that year and briefly rubbing shoulders with Bill Rodgers during the race. The race would start in Fort Lee, NJ and end in Fort Tryon Park, NYC. The upper level of the George Washington bridge was closed off for the race. Imagine that!

Regarding John Howard/""Pedals 475 Miles in Day"" - is anyone here still a disbeliever in the performance enhancing qualities of high fructose corn syrup. ;)"

Heat and Wind

The heat index must be a lot lower since cyclists create a 20 mph breeze.
