Who has cycled in Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Austria or the Czech Republic and can tell me about it?

A friend and i are thinking of taking a 10-day trip in the end of August.

We would be interested in finding a town to stay in for a few days and take day trips from there in the mountains (such as the Tatras). A bit of local culture is definitely a plus (we might even take our instruments).

We'd also consider moving about a bit for variety -- maybe choosing two locations to spend a few days in each for maximum linguistic confusion. . .

Anyone have anything to recommend?

thanks!

Cat,

A Swedish pal of mine (and ardent cyclotourist) just got back from Slovenia. He's ridden everywhere (much like Jay) and says Slovenia ranks as among the favorites. I'll get a little trip report from him and forward to you.

I've cycled a bit in the Austrian Alps, but just Grossglockner and Zell-am-See --> Zell-am-Ziller --> Innsbruck, so I don't have too much to say about that. Yeah, I do. If you want to ride the southern Alps/Dolomites, stay where the food is gooooood, and the towns end in vowels. :-)

"You realize that all those countries you mention are quite spread far apart from eachother with Austria in the middle. Having cycled Salzburg to Vienna and traveled to most of the other places, I would recommend Salzburg. It happens to be central more or less to all thos countries and besides I've a weakness for mountains, lakes and music. The downside is that it is not as ""exotic"" as cities/towns may be in the other countries, but the upside is that being more developed means conveniences that make it a good hub."

If you can wait until...

"...the end of September, the World Championship Road Race is in Salzburg this year and is something to consider."
