Can anyone recommend a firm saddle that flairs up at the back and is good for climbing? I have been using a Selle San Marco Concor, which does flair up at the back and I have noticed more power to the pedals when climbing(as a result of pushing agianst the flair for leverage). The problem is that it is a little narrow and soft for me. On rides of more than 50 miles, my butt gets sore.

Fizik Aliante

If you like the Concor you'll probably like the Aliante.

Thanks Evans. Do you know if the SSM ASPide flat at the back of the saddle, or has a little lip?

Bicycle Workshop/Lending Library

"I think the name of the shop is Bicycle Workshop, on 501 in or near Tenafly, on the way to Piermont--they have a ""lending library"" of saddles. It costs $10 to try one. You can actually try the saddle before you by it. They have about 10 or 15 saddles. You can buy the saddle you tried at a discount because it's used, or you can buy a new saddle of the same model. I think they apply the $10 fee to the cost of the new saddle, I'm not sure. But it's a great deal and a great idea.

(This is the shop with the ""bone cruncher""--an old bike with a very large front wheel--in front. Someone please correct me if I have the shop's name wrong.)

Thanks everyone for your input. I also found out that Jack Rabbit Sports, in the city, will let you samples saddles, also. That seems like a good option for New York Cityites. I am going to give them a try.

Saddles

Has anyone had experience with purchasing a bicycle saddle from Jackrabbit Sports in Brooklyn (151 7th Avenue)? What about their store Manhattan store (42 W 14th Street)?

I haven't bought a saddle from them, but I will highly recommend their store.

The bike fitters, Jon and Sue, seem to know what they are doing (they adjusted my tri bike fit, and did a really great job with it). Also, very nice and friendly (unlike some other bike shops). FWIW, both are very fast triathletes too.

Their running shoe fitting system is the best in NYC in my opinion (I won't get into details since it's not a running message board, but I think my experience with their running shoe fitters speaks of the overall quality of the shop).
